Re: The RP Message Board Continued!

Gentleman Vaultboy
I don't think it's possible for government and politics to be in the background with this type of setting.

For example, say you've taken down an Overlord. Now who's running the country? You? What's you claim to leadership, that you beat the old overlord? Some other third party? What's their claim? What's the new chain of command? What about those who disagree with the new regime, or were happy under the stability provided by the overlord? What are we going to do with the loyalist, the underlings, the people that make the nation work under them?

Then, working on the assumption that each overlord is powerful enough to be a deterrent, what's to keep a different one from rolling in after you're gone? Or a few, each vying for the resources of the old overlords nation? Just take out one of them and you've destabilized the entire region. Keep doing it, and you've potentially destabilized the entire world as every hotshot would-be dictator and freedom fighter starts to question whether these guys are as invincible as they seem.

Beating an Overlord is the easy part. All the interesting stuff happens after that.

Well, yes, that all is quite true. I guess I misspoke when I said 'in the background'. I actually just meant I didn't want them to be heavy-handed within the plot's development. I don't want it to come across as me promoting liberalism, conservatism, libertarianism, communism, socialism, any sort of religion/secularism, etc.

I want those to be dramatic elements, left up to the reader's interpretation. As in, 'here is what all is going on, as objective as possible, without me pushing my opinion about the things that take place'.

For example, there's some places where prostitution, gambling, polygamy, etc are plainly legal, and state regulated (and government and political corruption is common nearly everywhere). I don't want to come across as though I support or discourage them, only that they exist.

Though, yes, you are right, taking down Overlords and establishing new rule is quite interesting stuff, and likely going to be the seat of plenty of conflict.

Not to mention, most people don't know whether to make the main supers out to be heroes or villains. So that should be fun. Especially after they get more organized, and begin to spread their efforts.

I've discovered that once one has fallen out of an arc in New Beginning, it is exceedingly hard to fall back in unless done so literally and even then it would break up the flow of events.

Not really.

It's right in the middle of an action break. Now is the perfect time to jump back in.

Quite excellent timing, to be honest. In about a post or two, we'll be landing on Earth, and then, we're headed to the final battle scene, during which we will do combat, but mainly find out what schematic the Technari are looking for, and trying to reach the leader of the Technari, Motherboard Prime.

Also, GV, any more ideas on ESRP?

Are you aware of the original story behind the Evolutionist's Stone's arrival? What do you think of its background story?

I know that it's the last shard of a meteor that came down from the sky and gave everyone superpowers. Was there more to it than that?

I actually imagined we might catch up with you in the fray of battle, and that you'd tell us you heard that the Technari were headed to Earth, and you wanted to help me out, so you hurried there, only to find out we hadn't made it yet. So, while you were waiting for us, you joined in on the battle against the mechanical menace.

It was first discovered by a scientist, P. Maxwell (may have gotten the name wrong).

That may become significant later, but for now, yeah, basically, that's all you need to know. Nobody has any clue as to whether it has any real powers or not. It should never be fully disclosed, one way or the other, until the series is drawing to a close.

Also, we don't know what celestial body/star system it comes from.

Naturally, there's plenty of conspiracy theories about it.

Oh, and the President is this guy. His significance to the above information shall be revealed later (as in, when the story gets going, and I need help planning along the way).

Was he trying to change the constitution before the stone came down, because he doesn't seem to have much of a country left to run.

Also, with a name like Golden-Manning his power has to amazing.

He wanted to change the Constitution, to allow more than two terms for Presidency. He was formerly a lawyer.

And yes, I plan on his powers being awesome.

Meh.

Part of me wonders if it could be more interesting.

Like, what if the universe decided to take all those silly little ways superheroes get their powers in comics and dump them all on the world at once.

Not so much an Event as a tsunami of little events. A tsunami that never quite stopped. Slowed, yes, but not ceased.

It could certainly be more interesting, if more diverse opinions and perspectives would get involved in planning the setting, plot and characters...

If you recall, the RP was intended to be planned and executed as a joint effort.

Ya know, GV, I think I'm ready to start working on the first setting for the story. Would you like to help?

Sure.

First setting as in the place where it all starts, right?

Yes.

I think I'd like to start the story by introducing the Australis Event, and then moving into where our heroes reside. They live in California, with The Mover as Overlord. Though, they fear him too much. The one they go after first is Caleb Trelaine. Something about his intrusion on The Mover's land causing civil war, which is way more trouble than it's worth.

Not sure what the setting should be, though. Or how to develop it from that point.
