You know, Heroes employed a similar idea. Hiro was a cubicle worker who needed escape, so he wound up a teleporter; DL wanted nothing more than to escape prison, so he became a phaser.

It'll be tough for my scientific-method, rigorously-test-everything-to-death mind to wrap itself around such disparate abilities, but I suppose the underlying ability could be a manipulation of tissue structures.

Personality- Living in a small Japanese town, everything that young Daisuke Yamamoto knew was destroyed in a fire caused by the Event. Hoping to escape his past and Japan's new overlord, he found a small abandoned boat and set sail, hoping to land in Korea. Unfortunately, on the first day of his journey, his ship was hit by the kamikaze, the god wind that protects Japan's shores from invasion. He lost all his supplies and his ship was nearly wrecked, sent adrift in the Pacific with no way to steer. Months later, the barely-intact boat washed up on the West Coast of the United States. He had manged to stay alive through constant meditation, and during this time Daisuke, inspired by the ancient gods of Japan, took three new names, Seigi, Tatsu, and Tamashii, and acquired his powers. I dunno. I mean, I'm not the biggest fan of magic in ANY story, and any superhuman ability could be construed as magic--reality bending, etc.

But the story is bigger than just one writer. Tough call.

Well, It can depend.. Magical abilities can have as many weaknesses - or more - than normal abilities.. It may be that the ability is just really specific (Necroosiousmustelidaeurgy- The magical ability to manipulate dead skeletal weasels.), Limits on how frequently it can be used, limits on WHAT it can do (Strength restraints), have terrrrible consequences if you abuse it, or just not do things.. for some reason.



Not all magic is of the reality warping variety. I think that If magic IS put in the Rp, it should be a jack-of-all trades thing.

They can divine the future (With more work and less clarity than a precog)
Levitate and fly (Without the innate talent and speed a flyer gets)
Shapeshift (But without the spontaneity and relative safety of a  shape-shifter)
Make Illusions and/or energy blasts..

you could make them do a variety of things, just not all that well.
