Don't.

I guess.
Well, like I said, it's up to you, because I'm not really familiar with HP and PP systems.

Well, basically, Metal would work like that, but with a few edits.

Here's a few kinds of cards from games I know about.

Yugioh.

Has an Attack and Defense value. You can place a monster card in Attack Position or Defense Position. In Attack Position, the ATK value is used when another monster attacks this one. The one with the higher value wins, destroying the other and inflicting life point damage to the looser. In Defense, the defending monster uses the DEF value, while the attacker uses ATK. If the attacker wins, the defending monster is destroyed and the owner looses life points. If the defending monster wins, the attack lives, but the difference in the attacker's ATK and the defender's DEF is removed from the attacking player's life points.

Magic the Gathering.

Has Power/Toughness.

Creatures have two values that represent their strength in combat: power and toughness. These values are printed on the lower right-hand corner of the card, with a slash separating them. The first number is the creature's power; the amount of damage it deals in combat. The second number is its toughness; if it receives that much damage in a single turn, it is destroyed and placed in the graveyard. Creatures cannot attack or use tap abilities until the turn after the the turn they come into play unless otherwise is specified in the effect of the creature. This rule is informally called "summoning sickness". Creatures that have switched control from one player to another will also have "summoning sickness". Creatures also have one or more creature types, located after the word "creature" in the type line. Creature types are simply markers and have no inherent abilities; for example, being a Bird does not automatically give a creature the flying ability.

That would require us to link a bunch of elements together.

As it stands, elements only affect one or two other elements. They're neutral to any others.

Magic: The Gathering style seems okay to me, but I wonder...is there any way to combine the two?

Well, I'm pretty sure Metal and Sand can work somehow as distinct elements.

Not really.

I like MTG because it allows several weaker creatures to gang up on a single powerful one.

True, I agree. That was my first choice in the event you said the two couldn't be somehow combined.

I need two more to link up.

Lightning electrifies metal, Metal beats.. something, Something beats sand, Sand beats something, something beats lightning?

Earth grounds Lightning, Lightning electrifies Metal, Metal cuts Plant, Plant grows through Sand,..

Five. I need Five elements to finish the cycle.

Metal beats Poison, Water beats Sand, Sand beats Ice (?debatable?), Ice beats Lightning.

Did you count Luck? That beats Death, and is beaten by Life.

That results in asymmetry.

And why is Ice beating Lightning?

Alright. Take every element you want to use, and have it beat another element and be beaten by another element.

Or have it beat two elements and be beaten by two.

So long as everyone has a match, everything is good.

On second thought.

Give me a comprehensive list of the elements you want to use. Make sure it's an even number (Don't count Divine).

I have a plot.

Ice beats Lightning because of the three.

Or...maybe it doesn't.

I dunno, you pick.

That's an odd number of elements.

But I can work with that.

Hey, anything beat Fate? (Mythologicaly speaking?)

I know, it's a lot. But I think it covers everything accurately.

And I would think that Fate and Divinity are kinda like Light and Darkness.

I was going to have Fate beat Divinity (Like Fates being more powerful than the Greek Gods), but I'd need something that Divinity is strong against, yet Fate is weak against.
