Well, I think the hardness, sharpness, etc, would directly determine how much damage a foe takes (barring spells and special abilities that induce immunity, healing, etc).

Before we go further, though, do you figure we ought to just turn this into a D&D campaign, with a hugely expanded mythical critter base, or do you prefer to devise your own system?

I'd rather devise my own system

I'm okay with that. So have you got a starting point in mind?

I'm not a verteran of game design but I guess we should start with the basic mechanics of character stats and then move onto movement and combat.

Okay, so did you have a certain set-up you'd like to go with?

starting from scratch.

a basic movement system where speed determines number of spaces capable of moving in one turn and when paired with dexterity as a multiplier determines ability to dodge and do refined actions.

so basic pathfinder/d&d/Gurps movement sytems. I've been going through trying do some world building and character stat research over the past few days trying to figure out a stat system for both this and Generic.

been also trying to rap my head around an online multiplayer rpg game board that I'm thinking of using.

mainly trying to figure out how cruel I should be, should it be capable for a low dex character with a high speed stat to chop off their own head after rolling a 1.

I have to admit, I'm awful at coming up with mechanics like these, but I'd love to see what you come up with.
