Odd I have know idea why i would amuse someone. As a side note, I could do the plot rundown if you like, pretty much every part of every book I've ever read except for the names of the characters is permanently sketched into my memory...."Shudder"

The thing is, you can pack a deep interpretations into anything.

It's very, very easy.
“She'd become a governess. It was one of the few jobs a known lady could do. And she'd taken to it well. She'd sworn that if she did indeed ever find herself dancing on rooftops with chimney sweeps she'd beat herself to death with her own umbrella.”

I read the plot, such wasted potential. If the key instigators of discord had been eliminated early on by one character then an organized dictatorship could be wrought that led to an easy escape from the island. On a side note, have you read "The Mysterious Island" by Jules Verne?

Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy a classic when i see it, but I don't need to be reminded about this stuff on a daily basis.

Blah Blah Blah, Kids stuck on island. Soon factionize and eventually turn into crazed savages and kill each other.

It's been awhile since I've read it though, so I may have forgotten some aspects of it.

Not CONTROL. .

If people have no rules, or rather, nobody to enforce them, then their differences of opinion caused them all to descend into chaos. They viewed one another as being on the same level, and thus, rather than following the rule of law, they followed whichever rules they saw fit to follow.

Of course, if you simplify it like YOU did, it'd seem stupid, but it's not so simple as that.

Consider every element of the book.

1) Get marooned on an uninhabited island.

2) Try, unsuccessfully to reestablish rules and order.

3) Jack, who was jealous of Ralph, for not getting picked to be leader, leads the others to rebel.

4) Two of the most sensible boys on the island are killed.

5) Ralph is about to be killed, like the pig that was killed before.

6) Rescued right on time, the boys begin crying, as though they regret their wrongful actions now that an authority figure has come to return them back to "civilization"...

you mean the book about the island of Dr. Moreau, if so I read a plot summary of it and it looked pretty good.

by the way just to prove Zalermancer's point

THe book captain underpants clearly states within it's pages that even at the heart of the most clearly evil and corrupt of human beings lies the potential, and need to do good. In addition it also shows key insight into the potential of humanity, if given the right direction and drive even the least impressive of the species can turn themselves into something amazing. As for the lack of scientific reality, it's basically a statement on how the general public seems to swoloow whatever it has learned without  really understanding the core concepts or reasons, or at least at an early age. In addition it also is a satire of how in modern days time people seem to benefit from the aspects of technology without ever trully wondering how they work past the casual thought. The two main characters themselves, are an examination of how potential and true tallent can be warped by the modern educational system into a pure anti authorital state.

Fun is not a word I think anyone would use to describe that book. Not even people who like it would use that word.

Deep, maybe. Violent?

Yes, that's true, but it shouldn't keep you from perceiving any depth of meaning in ANYTHING AT ALL...

Psychological.

That's DEFINITELY a word I'd use.

No The Mysterious Island is a different book. It connects to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea.

Who made the rules?

Humans. People. They made the rules.

No matter what happens, people will not dwell in chaos forever, or even for an extended period of time.

Eventually, someone or some group will take lead/gain support and make new rules to follow.

Actually, a rule-less system could work effectively for small groups. Large ones would collapse.

Well, that's more than a little naive.

I do look for depth in things.

However, any book I read for that reason or just one that happened to have depth are not books I was given in school and told, "Read this now, even If you don't want to."

Generally, I don't sit there and think about the deep inner meanings of books. I either figure it out as I read or let it rest.
