Did he hear something that made him not want to get on the train (or feel that the train was unsafe)?
He did hear something, but it still wanted to get on the train.
Hint: The reason he did not board the train is not supernatural.

I know it wasn't supernatural, you said it was physical...

Did he hear a typical sound like a squeak, or a bang or a click, or was it specialized, like a conversation or the conductor saying something?

I meant the reason is not because of the effect of an ability, like being held in place, persuaded not to board the train or making the train disappear. If it was someone else, actually there were, they wouldn't have any problem.
It was specialized.

An invitation? Nope.
Maybe something tells him that taking a later train would be more beneficial than taking the first train? Nope. Hint: The thing he heard had nothing to do with trains.
The reason why he stays on the platform: positive (like an intuitive hunch) or negative (like a premonition of death)? It's kinda positive. It's can be slightly stupid to some, or honorable to others.
