Vespert
Are the two parties involved in this riddle in proximity, or are they apart? They're within audible distance.
And just so we know for sure, the power itself is not sound based, right? It is; you just don't get to do anything weird and apocalyptically superpower-esque with it.

So, in what way does it produce an affect with sound?

Does it:

Amplify sound?

Distort/Alter sound?

Diminish sound?

Catch the subject's attention supernaturally?

Attract people?

Invoke a change in consciousness?

Require a certain catchphrase?

Invoke control, or some other conditioned response that would have the same effect on ALL people affected by it?

So, in what way does it produce an affect with sound? It just enhances a way you can produce a certain type of sound.
Does it:
Amplify sound? Nope.
Distort/Alter sound? Nope.
Diminish sound? Nope.
Catch the subject's attention supernaturally? Nope.
Attract people? Nope.
Invoke a change in consciousness? Nope.
Require a certain catchphrase? Nope.
Invoke control, or some other conditioned response that would have the same effect on ALL people affected by it? Nope.

I think you're going to hate the answer.

Yes, I probably will...

Does the holiday greeting have anything to do with the power itself? Or was that part totally irrelevant to finding the answer?

Does the ability manipulate vocal organs (vocal cords)?

Does the ability require the voice to work?

Does the holiday greeting have anything to do with the power itself? Or was that part totally irrelevant to finding the answer? It has an important part because it explains why the guy reacted this way.
Does the ability manipulate vocal organs (vocal cords)? Not sure.
Does the ability require the voice to work? Yes.

Does the other person actually say to get up and do something?

Is it Simon Says?

Is it a phrase that requires you to do a kind of gesture in response?

Is it an English phrase?

Is it a phrase that requires you to do a kind of gesture in response? That's the idea.
Is it an English phrase? In English-speaking countries, yes.
Also, it's not just a phrase, it's much longer than that.

Pledge of Allegiance? National Anthem? Something else pertaining to patriotism?

Independence Day?
Bow before your unimaginably powerful overlord!

Wait a minute, I'm currently too busy holding a cork in mid air for petty groveling.

Gotta be something pertaining to patriotism...

I think you're overthinking it. It's a very simple power. Remember, an anthem is a song.
