Um...what about maybe one like some kind of purply, psychic, glowy wraith type? Perhaps head floating above the shoulders sans neck, a weird mask, claws with no hands attached? Flowy, spectral robes?

 Does not.

It's not just a huge floating face...it's like a wraith. Basically looks like a dark purply self-animated robe giving off a "fear aura" or "phobic miasma" to induce fear. And it would be masked. The eyes would be that "Danny Phantom neon green", with the mouth on the mask stitched together like a creepy puppet, and the eyes of the mask "exed-out" like it's dead.

Maybe give the concept a rough sketch tryout, and see if you still come up with a familiar picture.

Here it is, my personal Digimon and its digivolutions. Throughout all levels, this Digimon is the Virus type.

Fresh Level: Mamon
In this level the mask has not formed in yet but is indicated by a change in fur color. It has a mouth but it is unnoticeable while it is closed.

In-Training Level: Masmon
In this level and further levels the fur is gone. The mask has formed in and its legs have grown.

Rookie Level: Maskmon
In this stage it has become more humanoid. In this level and all other levels the mask is irremovable. Its claws have three forms. Its standard clawed hand, a dagger hand where the claws are fused together and retracted, and a blade hand where the claws are fused together and extended.
Moves: 1. Dagger bolt: While the blade is retracted, Maskmon can fire out long range bolts of energy.
2. Drill Buster: With blade extended, Maskmon can rotate the blade for a drilling attack.
3. Cross Slash: Maskmon's strongest move, by crossing its extended blades and striking out with a mid range cross of energy.

Champion Level: Angemaskmon
In this stage an extra pair of arms and wings are formed. Better clothes are formed than its previous tattered ones.
Moves: 1. Energy blades: The claws extend into blades of energy instead of physical blades as in the previous level.
2. Darkness Orbs: Spheres of solid darkness are formed in its clawed hands and are used as projectile attacks.
3. Black Wires: Claws extend out as strands of energy to entangle opponents.

Ultimate Level: Viralmaskmon
The largest of all the stages. It becomes more beast like and muscled over its entire body. Many claws form on each hand and all point forward together like a drill.
Moves: 1. Gatling claws: The claws rotate and fire out black bolts in rapid succession
2. Dimension Shift: Allows it to grow or shrink in size as needed.
3. Thunder Judgement: Its strongest move, the claws rotate and build up energy on them until they are released in a massive bolt.

Mega Level: Warmaskmon
This is a biomerged level. It becomes between the size of its champion and ultimate levels. Its body is covered in black armor except for its white masked helmet and it gains a sword.
Moves: 1. Spatial Step: Allows it to move rapidly by shifting short distances.
2. Digi-Soul: Allows it to form black-digitalized clouds that can take different shapes as necessary.
3. Black-Light Blade: Its blade takes in dark and light energy to increase its destructive power.

These aren't drawn terribly great as you can tell, so if you have a question about the way something is supposed to look, just ask.

So, Mamon and Masmon have noticeable fur? or is the fur short enough to be drawn as just a smooth outline? ( this is purely for drawing purposes. I can elaborate if need be)

The clothes on Maskmon, what type are they? Like a poncho or something?

Are the stripe-like marking on Angemaskmon part of his skin or clothes?
