Rapture Virus

I have been working on this story for awhile and I do think it is ok, but please feel free to critisize.

The world is struck by a virus which affects humans, it affects humans by altering their genetic structure which does gove them a special skill which is completely unique. Also this altering does affect them physically so their skill can work, for example if the person could absorb heat their skin might turn black so they can absorb it (this is also so they can be easially identified as a "rapture" and know to be careful). The governement try to capture them as they don't like people running around with these skills, but four people escape for the program and deciede to stop the government and fight back.

Here are the 4:

Name: James Scarlet

Rapture: able to switch between other peoples raptures with eye contact.
Side-effect (physical change)- eyes have been turned into a glowing red, when he switches the other person inherits his glowing eyes and James gets the persons rapture

Name: Adam Ale

Rapture: Able to shape and form his left hand out of water
Side-effect: :eft hand was transmuted into water
Side: 4


Name: Mike Ore

Rapture: Super strength granted by his right arm
Side-effect: His right arm was transmuted into an unbreakable metal alloy

Name: Preston Hearth

Rapture: Flight due to heat jets
Side-effect: His feet are constanly on fire and is able to produce heat jets to fly (only as long as oxygen is in the air)
Side: 4


This is just the beggining and you guys can add as many characters as you want (also state wheather they are government, neutral or 4- 4 are the four trying to beat the government). Make sure you make them as unique as you possibly can.

I had a similar idea a while back. It came from a dream, so I kept the origin, but elaborated on it a bit.

Four astronauts travel to Mars on a mars direct style mission. However, one of them is undiagnosed with HIV, contracted shortly before departure. When on Mars, HGT occurs between a native soil bacterium, which has been mutated to evolve at an accelerated rate.

This creates a virus which mutates it's host, but in a completely random way. It is bloodborne and highly infectious -one drop of blood is enough. It can take from a few hours up to a few years, leading the condition to be called "second puberty".

The original infected astronaut returns to Earth with his crew at the end of his mission, but during a party thrown by his family, he discovers his reality manipulating abilities. His wife starts to transform into a savage half terror bird mutant. His teenage son, bitten by his mother, begins to mutate into a bird hybrid, but he keeps his human mind and he turns into a creature like Angel from X-men. The disease spreads, becoming several strains, such as the "avian strain" which attaches bird DNA to people.

In the end, the cure is a mutant who's mutation is to have NO mutation, creating the "cure" strain, but this does not act as a vaccine.

Rapture: Reality Warping.
Side Effect: Comes with another personality, which gains a stronger hold on him each time he uses it.
Side: Wants to kill the persona.

Name: ???????
Rapture: Rapture Theft; he gets another power and renders his target human again.
Side Effect: Takes a bit of the victim's soul as well, which attempts to gain control, sapping his sanity. As a result, you cannot truly kill his victims without killing him.
Side: Wants to get raptures from people who hate their powers to get more powerful. He was originally against this, as he didn't want to get more souls, but circumstances forced him to do so.

Name: ???????
Rapture: Regenerative super strength. When he is injured, his cells are revived to be stronger than before, as well as not aging.
Side effect: Since when the cells regenerate for the first time, they stop aging, his body will eventually be a mismatched selection of different ages.
Side: The four.

Name: Robert ???????
Rapture: Can touch people and get a copy of their rapture. Can hold as many as he likes, but when he is unconscious, even for a second, he reverts back to his original.
Side effect: When he acquires a rapture, while he doesn't get the physical side effect (unless it's part of the rapture itself), the body part which acquired the rapture glows and fades over the course of an hour, but flares up for another 10 minutes if he uses it.
Side: The government, against his will. He is secretly looking for a way to escape them and collect a rapture which enables him to remain awake indefinitely.

Name: John Steven
Rapture: John's body secretes a highly addictive drug, which the government uses to control Robert. Instant addiction, withdrawal from which weakens the body, even causing raptures to fade.
Side effect: John's skin has turned blue, due to the drug building up underneath his skin. It fades to the normal pink if he uses his rapture on a lot of people.
Side: The government controls him by removing the substance, thus returning his pink skin and preventing his fingers from oozing the drug. He does not know how to release the liquid naturally, which is the only reason the government have power over him. If he found out how to do so, he would leave them and be able to turn the tide of the war.

Note: About halfway through I realized I was typing in a character similar to a Marvel one. However, he needs to get the substance into the victim through consumption.

Rapture: Able to suck things into his mouth through a vacuum when he opens it. Due to this he can communicate telepathically.

Side- effect- When he opens his mouth he creates a black hole. So he can speak telepathically.

Rapture: His rapture is a synthetic rapture which allows him to strip raptures of their skills or just kill them.
Side-effect: On his right hand he has talons which when he stabs them into a rapture takes their skill and side-effect.

Anyway, some more ideas:

Name: Josh Fletcher
Rapture: Telekinesis, boosted by the presence of other raptures. For instance, alone, he seems normal, even physically. When around a lot of raptures, though, he could lift cargo ships high into the air.
Side Effect: As his power grows, his body produces heat and light. He is immune to it, but this is dangerous to other people, as it could blind or burn them. It also acts as an effective defense.
Side: He leads his own army of raptures. He hates the government, wanting to destroy them with his army of raptures. However, he will kill anyone who gets in his way.

Name: Samuel Fletcher
Rapture: The ability to hide the side effects of other people's raptures, so they can sneak around undetected. He follows his brother, also having his power boosted by the presence of other raptures; each rapture who enters his "field" makes the field slightly larger.
Side effect: His skin has turned green, but it reverts when his power is in use.
Side: He works with his brother, but since he has morals, he disagrees with his methods. He only helps him to help his kind.

I didn't really think about that plot from Heroes. I never watched Heroes, except for the final episode, but I have read about it on the internet.

Also, this case is different;  it isn't like they can hide the fact they are Raptures as easily as the Heroes can hide their true nature -the Raptures have physical side effects, some of which are harder to hide than others. In addition, since the reason the raptures have powers is a virus, rather than evolution, anyone can hypothetically be turned into a rapture.

That gave me an idea:
The government is almost finished on a disease which would wipe out all raptures, but leave humans unscathed. If they make a prototype, they make a vaccine for it and put it in their raptures, then use normal humans (who are asymptomatic carriers) to spread it through the general population. They are using certain prototypes as weapons to cripple armies. To counter this, Josh is:
1) Training powerful newborn raptures to get them battle ready and obedient to him.
2) Using guerrilla warfare to counteract the low numbers.
3) Sabotaging the disease progress as much as possible.
4) Stealing the army and CDC's weapons to allow their numbers to flourish.
5) Attacking small numbers of troops whenever possible.
6) Infecting as many people as he can with the virus from himself, as a sample from a powerful rapture is more likely to produce another powerful rapture.
7) Collecting prototypes of the virus and getting rapture scientists to make a vaccine to offer protection against that strain and at least partial protection against the finished product.

Name: Harley Gates
Rapture: Psychic Superstrength, superstrength facilitated by psionic power, instead of muscular fortitude (he's superstrong despite his thin frame)
Side Effect: His skin is always aglow pinky purple, but the glow gets brighter when he uses his power, and even more if he uses it under emotional distress
Side: He leads his own army of raptures. He hates the government, wanting to destroy them with his army of raptures. However, he isn't much of a team player, and would rather have people work for him than with him.

Name: Natalia Vade (alias- true name unknown)
Rapture: Bodily Possession (can physically phase into the body of another and assume control over their body; if she chooses, she can eject the foe's consciousness from his body, so that when she leaves, the subject dies)
Side effect: Her skin is blue-purple, and her voice is dual (as though she is demonically-possessed)
Side: Girlfriend of Harley Gates, she acts as his right-hand, executing anything he asks with fearless loyalty.

Rapture: Electricity Powered Strength--Gets stronger physically by absorbing electricity--he literally sucks electricity from sockets and batteries
Side Effect: Loss of sense of taste, addiction to electricity, withdrawal symptoms when without electricity, immunity to electric shock
Side: He is on his own side and often goes up against the government which leads him to move quite often. Doesn't trust other people much less other raptures.

His absorbing electricity is inspired by Cole mcgrath but he is not an electrokinetic he's more akin to an electric vampire.
