So, who wants to talk about the magical traditions of their people?
“She'd become a governess. It was one of the few jobs a known lady could do. And she'd taken to it well. She'd sworn that if she did indeed ever find herself dancing on rooftops with chimney sweeps she'd beat herself to death with her own umbrella.”

Um, ask me something more specific and I'll try to tell you.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. |

Well, let's see...
The Yukionna and Yukiotoko are pretty much just ice and snow mages but a few can use other magics. They can use their magic for offense or defense, to aid or to destroy. Yukionna and Yukiotoko form the image in their mind of what they want to have their spell do, then release their mana. Example of a Lower Level Spell: Icestrike - This spell tends to absorb energy from the air and giving it to the caster for other stronger spells before firing off the icicle that was formed, however if the area frozen is too big then the caster loses mana instead of gaining any.

How do people generally use magic, what do they do with it, and what does it look like?

Dragonborn: Most common would be either their Dragon-breath ability or them using magic as spellswords.
Goliaths: Shaman like connection to Earth / Nature. Shardmind: Most like Sorcerers. Genasi: Elemental magic Shifter: Druids Humans: Any type.

The Durhians tend not to use magic and instead focus on their craft, whatever it may be. However, a few have embraced the binding of magic into their creations through specialized processes. While they don't use the magic themselves they do embue certain objects with it.

They think of the effect they want tohave then release their mana, I guess. They're not fast physically so gestures are out of the question.

For example..
The Draemar have Sorcerers. Draemar Sorcery is marked by a simple fact- The Draemar have very little raw mana, as their method of magic was not given to them directly from a divinity. As such, the have to make and design their spells to be as cheap and efficient as possible. Most of these spells have long incantations and gestures, and rarely have any visual effect with them. They simply don't have the energy to waste on making glows and sounds. The Primary direction of their Sorcery is the control of present factors, rather than the introduction or alteration of new factors They'd rather control present water or air than create something new, or change earth into water. Most of them can't transmute things or conjure them out of thin air. However, they are fairly good at moving and controlling present things. Most of their offensive spells move energy or matter around, as well as a great many utility spells. Like Amalia, for example, uses a warming spell to mimic her southern home. The spell itself reflects heat her body produces, keeping it trapped in the air around her, while taking in excess to fuel the magic.

Is my example unhelpful or merely uninteresting?

Mine just aren't as descriptive as that at the moment. What I said pretty much sums them up.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. You do know that if it's not detailed enough, I may get bored and start adding things?

Describe how a Shardmind would use magic. Or what their magic focuses on. Or what limits the magic has.
And there is a reason I want a nice detailed setting. But that's a secret.

The Shardmind are the most magical. They don't have mouths so they don't use words to cast their spells. Some rely on gestures but they can cast spells through concentration. Some favorite types of magic are chaos or cosmic magic, but they can use other magics a sorcerer would. They are mostly limited by the magic they can channel at any one moment, since they get their mana from the Well of Eternity.

What kind of magic does a sorcerer use?
What is Chaos Magic? What is Cosmic Magic?

It is just general magic not every member of the race is going to have the same magic style.
I'm taking a lot of inspiration from D&D 4e, so just consider that when visioning the magic types.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. I don't play 4e, and therefore know nothing about how their Sorcerers work.
