Feh, totally worth it.
For some unknown reason, it is forbidden to wear shed centaur scales, and scales from the tails of mermaids, merrows and tritons, except by others of the respective species (centaurs wear centaur scales, etc). It is also forbidden to decorate magic objects with scales of sentient races.

(It's turning out pretty dystopian from what I can tell. Why not have a little bit of racism in it? Not like we'll be wiping out all the Vampires and Fexts under an evil dictator. At least, not as far as I know.)

Most Dwarves that commonly interact with the other races are outcasts among their culture. This is because Dwarves are, by nature, eusocial. The average Dwarf Colony consists of a few fertile females, some carefully cared for males and a legion of infertile female workers. Outcasts are generally workers who, for some reason, became fertile and were expunged before they could cause problems with the current crop of mothers.
Because of their former life as a nearly mindless and anonymous, most retaliate with wild behavior and appearance.

Every few weeks or so, people go missing, vanishing entirely without a trace. Those who return, come back...off.
(Goodness, had no clue the other idea was so disturbing...)

(You don't have to revert them just because I don't care for it. That's something I would do, not you.)

There is rolling civil war across the world between those that hold the rules scared and those that see them as archaic and superstitions. In general, the further one get's from the factory itself the more personal freedoms one is allowed to enjoy.

(Hey, I'm trying compromise. Go figure.)
Djinni are said to have introduced the concept of item-based magic. The only race to dispute this is the Humans, who claim it was their ancestors.

Dwarfs, being primarily reptilian, can unhinge their jaws and swallow things much bigger than themselves.

(Dang, why the heck are Dwarves and Centaurs reptilian? Goodness...and to think, I almost included Gorgons as a race instead of Ogres...)
Though uncommon, it is not unheard of for magic to be used, in order to change from one race to another. Most often, it is humans (who shift into nearly any other race except Goblins, Ogres and Morlocks). And in many cases, the magic results in a permanent change (whether the magic user wants it to be, or not).

(Because it's fun to play with new concepts. I'm sorry for being upset earlier, it's just that GRIMMDARK has no appeal to me. I don't mind DARKNESS, I just like for there to a light at the end of the tunnel.)
Ogres are known for having quite beautiful singing voices, and while no reports of Ogre/Human hybrids exist, rumors still abound that some of the more talented singing families of humans have Ogre blood in their veins.

Giants are often the target of hunting parties, as they inevitably manage to craft fine jewelery for themselves composed of very high quality steel. How they make these items, or where they acquire them is unknown. One Giant's set of jewelery is often enough to outfit a good portion of an army, but it's rare for hunting parties to actually win a fight with a Giant.
They are large, but far from stupid.

(Because centaurs have reptilian lower bodies, and Dwarfs and Goblins share ancestry with them.)
There is a book that classifies Magical Artifacts entitled Parts: The Shed Skin of the Factory that is able to tell you exactly what an artifact can do before you use it. This is very helpful, because Artifact Effects are not always beneficial. The book was in print for only a short time, and is very rare and valuable.

(I'm trying to set up a few characteristics of each race, so I can then set up cultures and traditions and what not. All the cool stuff. :3 Just thought I'd give a heads up on why most of my posts are focusing on races)
Mermaids must tread the divide between sea and land. The longer they spend within water, the more fish-like they become. The longer they remain on land, the more human-like. This is the reason Mermaids often spend time perched on sea rocks combing hair and looking nervously in the mirror. All Mermaids fear waiting to long and becoming trapped in one form or the other.

Mermen could care less for their constant state of flux. They gladly follow after whatever their mate (or desired mate) looks like; if she (or he) comes to live on land, they gladly come to live on land; if she (or he) lives in the sea, they gladly remain in the sea.
