Re: real powers??

simple, I crack and become king of monsters for a while, then I end up running errands, for heavenly beings, and during that I'll end up participating in the final battle.

Re: Science vs Magic

neogenetica
Depends on if science is everything known by the general population, things known by humans and possibly aliens or the definition of the phenomena of the universe in which case almost everything would be science. Remember the technology we posses now would seem magic to people two hundred years ago and sometimes magic and technology could become so alike that to someone who dident know it would be indestinguishable.

Re: Science vs Magic

jester_of_god
magic is usually described as an innate ability used by organisms and objects to directly tap into the Universes inner workings and processess. While science takes a more blunt direct approace.

Simile

Magic= unlocking a safe with the correct combination

science= bashing open a safe with a club.

both of you are kinda off-base.

Science is that which is known by sentient beings: aliens, people, whatever (as long as you have some means of comprehending it)

Magic is that which cannot be achieved by scientific means. Not even time travel or shapeshifting is considered magical if it can be explained in some way that includes what people know to be laws of physics... (no creating or destroying matter, etc.)

EX: Shapeshifting by rearranging the DNA structure, by some machine or device (or even pure act of will)= science/pseudo-science/science fiction (all the steps can be traced, and have a source)

Shapeshifting by rearranging the DNA structure, by an incantation, spell, curse, etc.= magic (some unknown or unexplainable force triggers something that otherwise would not happen)

but everything can be be explained eventually. It might take us ten thousand years of trial and error but still. Even then the people who practitioned magic still explained their abilities in a way that resembled scientific, or at least religious, study.

Geez... I can't think... I'd say I like Magic better. Why?

 - Magic is supernatural, it does NOT have to make sense
 - Science is great, but it relies too much on logic, reason, and... well, understandable
 - I LOVE NOT MAKING SENSE!!!

Re: Science vs Magic

jester_of_god
would magic and faith be considered in the same category, please shadowulf don't remind me that magic is drawing upon your own power or that of a demon or whatnot, while faith is calling upon the almighty, but still I just want to know if their generalized  in the same category or not, like would something like the Jester be under Magic or Faith.

I wasn't going to remind you of anything, except that Magic is not the same as faith. Although both defy modern scientific logic, one is divine, the other is mortal/secular. Therefore, they are on two totally different levels. That's all that differentiates them.

As for Jester, it's considered a mix of science and faith. Science because it's distorting the laws of physics and can somewhat be explained (if only by the mind's power), and faith because it was bestowed (in your story) directly by God.

So? Science often doesn't make sence. For example, in biology, almost  every biological rule is defied by at least one organism. For instance:
1) DNA is composed of phosphorus, nitrogen and sugar. Also, arsenic is toxic.
-There is a lake in america which is full of arsenic; you'd expect it to be lifeless. However, there are bacteria in the lake which not only can survive the arsenic-heavy waters, but the arsenic has actually replaced the phosphorus in their DNA.
2) The organisms at the bottom of the food chain (excluding scavengers) must have plentiful sunlight to produce energy.
-Some organisms can undergo a similar process to photosynthesis, only with volcanic heat.
-Some plants can survive under ice in Antarctica using only 1/10 of a percent of surface sunlight. However, these do not have any predators to worry about.
3) Old age ensures all organisms die eventually.
-Some organisms are potentially biologically immortal, such as a jellyfish which can revert to a polyp in the right conditions.
4) Animals need to catch food, scavenge or graze to get their food.
-Corals hold algae inside their bodies which trade some of their energy in return for protection. This is why corals must grow near the surface of the ocean -they need sunlight.

I could keep gpoing if I needed to; these are just examples.
Bow before your unimaginably powerful overlord!

Wait a minute, I'm currently too busy holding a cork in mid air for petty groveling.

don't say science doesn';t OFTEN make sense; it doesn't ALWAYS make sense...

Is this thread based off of what happens in the manga, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun? Just a random question.

A little bit....its a little bit more about to aru majutsu no index---railgun is a spinoff manga

anyways the series has both magic user and espers

They are not really the best of friends but they are not openly hostile to the point of war--ie they know that if they fight that would cause mutual destruction or something like that.
