........the latter is actually pretty close, the last time it happened their was the smell of smoke, a loud popping noise, and what looked like a flash of light. The entire modem was scrapped and it wouldn't turn on anymore.

In that case then enough electricity must have gotten into it to damage the hardware. Physical reactions aren't usually elicited unless enough power got through or something happened to it in the first place.

Well if it helps i think this is the one RP you're allowed to be overpowered in. problem is everything that is trying to kill you is overpowered also.
