I'd help if I could but I tend to avoid spells as there are way to damn many of them to remember.

Did you consider the campaign you would be going on beforehand?

I mean, I know it's gotta be difficult to think of spells that would be general useful in the highly diverse campaigns of D&D, but there's got to be at least two or three that will be good to have in numerous campaigns.

Perception powers, attack powers, defenses. Something. Right?

Charm Person: Make friends with Humanoids.
Disguise Self: Illusionary Disguise.
Enlarge Person: Make someone BIG.
Orb of Fire, Lesser: Small Fire Ball!

Protection From Arrows: Duh.
Web: Sticky web ensnares area.
Detect Thoughts: Loldur.
Blur: 20% chance for attacks to miss me.
Rope Trick: Like the indian one.

Dispel Magic: Right.
Suggestion: Make an irresistible suggestion.
Fireball: FireballxBig.
Major Image: Big ass illusion.

Polymorph: Shapeshifting.
Scrying: Scrying.
Charm Monster: Make friends with ALL the THINGS.
Thunderlance: A lance of pure force.

Overland Flight: Flight for a day.
Baleful Polymorph: Into frogs.

Planar Binding: Summon and Control things.
Permanent Image: Like the Major Image, but long lasting.

Control Weather: Weather Control.
Teleport, Greater: Flawless.

Shout, Greater: Loud noises hurt.

Dominate Monster: Mind Control.


My DM has an odd notion that bonus spells due to high casting stat allows you to cast, say, level nine spells at level ten.

And my DM is aghast that I didn't select Mage's Magnificent Mansion.

 Well, why haven't you gotten the opportunity to use them? Obviously, your campaign calls for other things. What other things seem to have been needed, so far?

Oh, and what does Mage's Magnificent Mansion do? Sounds like a transportation and/or storage-type deal.

It doesn't seem so useful to me. Suppose it would be a good place to retreat in a bind. I would never use it though, seems like the kind of spell that could screw up and drop you in Sigil.

I'm aghast you didn't pick up Grease or Color Spray. I heartily approve of rope trick, though.

Color Spray peters out at higher levels, and I forgot Grease.

The Permanent Image thing could have been replaced with the Mage Mansion bit. And as you get stronger, you might want to add a couple more perception powers (literally, only about two), and maybe some more multifaceted things. Surely, there are spells allowing you mimic water or electricity or fire.

I am getting a trifle annoyed by the fact that people keep criticizing my spell choices.

Apparently, they expect me to blow everything up while standing behind a meat-shield.

I'm going to try to step up my game.

Overland Flight. Blur. Protection From Arrows.

Web. Planar Binding. Dominate Monster.

I'm going to crush this little bandit camp into the dust and show them how a Wizard can be powerful without blasting spells.

 I think I know the feeling. You think you're being prudent, and then the non-superpower-adept come up behind you telling you your crap is weak, because it doesn't blast the competition into smithereens.

I say right on. Give 'em a taste of their own medicine. Take on offensive powers, but only a few. And use them in combination with passive powers, to become a force to be reckoned with. It'll drive them crazy.

It sounds like they've been playing to much World of Warcraft.

A wizard is a whole toolbox. A wizard with the right spells can trivialize entire encounters.

My character has a nice number of enchanting spells.

And, if all else fails, Teleport is a great panic button.
