In the hall, Asoka grinned, regardless of Tiberius' warnings about being reckless, this was the defining value among her people, a good fight. She looked over at the others, pulling out Murasaki and let her mana flow into it, making it ignite, "Are you all ready? This is going to be good."

Tiberius began to play the song he had heard in his head.

Searching.

He would need something powerful. Used to fighting and war and death.

A melody flowed forward. Dark and sad and bloody.

The power it would take would be staggering. He couldn't do it all at once.

Best to build.

He began with a whistle a hum, a merry war tune. His mana, glowing like burnished copper, flowed into the song.
“She'd become a governess. It was one of the few jobs a known lady could do. And she'd taken to it well. She'd sworn that if she did indeed ever find herself dancing on rooftops with chimney sweeps she'd beat herself to death with her own umbrella.”

"No point delaying it any longer." Billy said, laying his hand on the bear skull atop his mount. "Silent as the grave, venerable one."

There was a silent rush of black wind and, as the creature strided forward through the huddle mass, the only thing that alerted them to the creature presence behind them was Tiberius's song. Pretty soon Billy had gotten an ear for the tunes rhythm, and as they reached the main doors was almost unconsciously humming along to it.

He patted Earthshaker's head twice, and the creature raised it's arms and placed them on either side.

Billy took a deep breath and looked back at the students behind them, quietly trying to communicate what he was about to do. From his creatures stance, he hoped they understood.

You know what they say about the best defense. Besides, they didn't need another situation like Kyrse.

5 tons of big scary monster threw the doors wide open and charged out of the relative safety of the dining hall, and it charged swinging.

Gripping onto the charging monstrosity, Tiberius was slightly surprised when his song took hold.

Shadows around rippled, then moved, given from and motive energy by his magic. Three small shapes burst from them, becoming dark and avian.

They spun and danced around the bone-giant, rasping.

Three ravens.

The ease of it was somewhat suspicious. It then dawned on him that the smell of potential slaughter had probably attracted them.

Tiberius glanced at Billy.

That and the presence of a necromancer.

The sight that greeted the students as they rushed into the corridors beyond the Grand Hall's massive oaken doors was one of grim and ominous foreboding. The Corridor was steeped in shadow as all but two torches remained lit and the tall windows on either side revealed only gloomy fog and the shifting shapes within.

Bits of the floor had been torn up as if by some great claw, marred as they were by jagged scores. The tapestries that had once hung proudly on the walls now sagged in heaps on the floor, flowing outwards as if they had been dragged along by a great weight. Something had charged through here. Something Big.

But the young mages could reflect only briefly on what creature could have caused the mess as the sounds of  battle began to rise from the end of the corridor. The large doors that stood there blocked the view, but bursts and shimmers of light glowed through the edges.

Whatever did this had been quiet doing it.

But there was no time to think about that now.

Billy patted his creation twice, pointed at the door, and said simply "Make it loud."

It defiance of all sense Earthshaker roared. It footsteps, no longer muffled and pounding like war drums, echoed far off into the corridors as the monster charged.

This door was not opened so gently.

The scene beyond the doors was horrific. Everywhere burned red flames. Debris and rubble were scattered amongst the many bodies that lay dead from a variety of causes. The Student Heads had not fared well against the initial onslaught. However, it was clear from the many signs of a struggle, they did not go down without a fight.

Further still from the door, in the midst of all the chaos and death, a single female mage struggled against three shadowy figures. She leapt into the air, multicolored flames billowing from her palms and feet as she combated the Acolytes. It was Red, her furious onslaught holding the acolytes at bay for now, but slowly she was losing.

Purple bolts of cryptic energies peppered the air as they screamed from on of the Alcolyte's fists. Another drew a gleaming bow and fired off several screeching bolts. The third simply watched from the shadows.

Seeing Red fighting the Acolytes alone, Asoka snarled, "Oh, no you don't! I'm not letting you take all of the fighting!"

She leapt towards the fighters with Murasaki in hand, throwing it straight at the one with the bow and charged, fist ready to strike at the one in the shadows.

Reckless? Not quite. Just the natural fighting style of those of the Draconic Empire.

"Miss Yama-" Billy stopped and watched as his friend threw herself into the fray. "Mr. Zaubar, defend the last." Billy said, hoping off the creature in the carnage around him. He wondered for a moment if the others would understand what he was about to do, but dismissed it. Now was not the time for worries.

Now it was time for justice.

He knelt on the bloodstained floor, laid his hands upon it, and chanted something between an incantation and a prayer. Loudly.

"Shining ones, noble ones, heroes all, who gave their lives defending those weaker than themselves. This humble servant regrets that now is not the time for rest. Listen, and know your cause has not been lost. Listen, and know  your enemy yet draws breath. Awaken! Serve right and justice one more time! Seek one last heart of evil! Still one last life of pain! Those of us that remain, the lucky ones, beseech you now for your aid. In the name of the Lord, awaken!"

Mana spilled over the ground, rolling black wind whipping past each of the corpses, spiraling, filling them. Though their souls had departed hot pulses of unlife began to stream along dormant neural pathways.

Then did not return to life. What was within them now was not their soul. A body can function without a soul, so long as it is provided with vital force, provided by a necromancer. No magic, but these imitation souls possessed reason and their memories of life.

One let out a rallying cry, and Reds reanimated comrades rushed passed her to throw their weight against the Acolytes once more along with Asoka.

I turn my attention to Asoka's friend from on top of EarthShaker. The others had the wards I cooked up earlier, but I did not have the time to cook up another one so elaborate in the middle of a fight, especially when she was already wounded. I resort to my default shield mote, the very first spell I mastered at this school. The yellow motes jump from my hand onto her skin, giving her a faint glowing outline as the shield clicks into place.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Tiberius simply held onto the Earthshaker. His coppery mana spooled off into the ravens as the glutted on the energies of the slaughter.

The Bow wielding acolyte stepped forward, the flames of the battlefield illuminating his form and reveling his nature to the others. Cloaked in savage black leather and grey steel studded armor that glowed with the subtle script of runes and darker magics, he raised his bow to the incoming attack of the young fire mage. The bow rippled and stretched, becoming heavier and thicker until a massive maul or black iron replaced it. The Acolyte swung the heafty maul with reckless abandon, swatting Murasaki from the air with ease. The maul continued on its path with unstoppable power, crushing the first line of the recently risen. As he lifted the maul again, the acolytes armor shifted to match the maul, becoming bulky and thick plated just in time to easily deflect the orb of wind that burst upon it. What could only be a harrowing laugh echoed from beneath the dark helm of the now massive warrior.

The Second acolyte shared in insane laughter as she too steeped forward into the light. She was a slender women dressed in a flowing silk robe of coppery red and purple. In her hand she held a small harp that blazed with an evil glowing aura. She struck a few chords and the aura struck out into the advancing undead mages, slicing them to ribbons.

The third acolyte continued to watch from the shadows, his eyes a stark white in the gloom. Piercing through the fog and smoke to glare at the young mages.

Red, now cloaked in the make-shift ward stumbled from the fight as the cavalry arrived. She clutched her side, clearly in pain as she made her way to the safety of Earthshaker's presence. She looked to the students gathered there and tried to mumble something before slumping against the wall from fatigue.

"The others....the others are..in.....the college. Must...stop them....before they ....they find....the.....the....door.....must....st......stop........them........"

Seconds later an earth shattering blast could be heard on the other end of the college.

Finally seeing his enemies, Billy thought that he should feel something. Fear, anger, excitement, something. The Billy from before, Not!a year and a half ago away, would have felt any of those things.

Now though the only thing he felt was a slight guilt at the corpses being torn apart. He would personally try to make as many of them acceptable for open casket as possible. The animating energy departed from the now useless vessels, returning to Billy as a rush of wind.

It rushed up, toward the ceiling, which Billy was falling from. He had leapt up there during the charge, clinging to the roof while the revenants made their attack. He had learned many lessons from the stories his mother had told him, stories of close calls and daring escapes, and one that was a common these was thus: 'Hit them when they aren't looking.'

So he descended on his target, the Harpist. The Vampire wasn't in the room. and if the man in the shadows had created the spider spell he hadn't shown it yet. It would be just his luck, Billy decided, if fully half of the abominations were in this room and none of them were the ones he was interested in.

He reared back an arm and drove it forward toward the Harpists neck, like a knife.

Asoka continued her forward charge catching Murasaki as it rebounded off the wall after being deflected and swung it first at the acolyte in the shadows.

As Asoka neared the shadow dwelling Acolyte his appearance became clear. He was tall and thin, almost skeletal-like. His framed was draped with and ill fitting and rather expensive looking suit. A small pin of a scroll decorated his lapel. He looked up at the approaching fire mage and smiled. His stark white eyes hypnotic and transfixing.

"What do you desire Child?"

His voice echoed eerily in Asoka's ears and the sounds of battle drifted away. Time seemed to slow, colors blurred and sounds faded into distant echoes as he spoke.

"There must be something you desire? Power? Money? Influence? What ever you want."

His voice was angelic, it seemed to swaddle Asoka in comfort. It was so trustworthy and caring. He had a silver tongue. Quite literally. As he spoke Asoka could see it as it slipped across his immaculately white teeth

"What do you wish?"

The Harpist turned at the last second, completely caught of guard. She plucked the strings of her harp in panic. The most horrible noise pierced the air. It vibrated through the bones of ever nearby being. Screeching and piercing painfully. Even the Massive armored Acolyte cringed.

As Eric ran through the halls, the screams of panic grew louder and louder until suddenly....they stopped. As he turned the next corner he was confronted by a horrible sight. Several bodies lay about the hall. Blood everywhere. A lone boy stood at the end, weeping.

"Help....help me!" He cried.
