Piper, Zauber, and Asoka make their way back through the secret passage and into the college.
Before they part ways, Zauber speaks up. "We should meet up again some time Piper, after all, you still need to teach me that charm you used on the secret passage" he says with a grin.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. |

As the trio leaves the city, they do not notice the cloaked figure who watches them. As they disappear from its view it turns down an abandoned alley. A voice, seeming to arise from the shadows behind one of the many dumpsters, calls out to the figure in a wheezing voice
"What did you see?" The cloaked figure shifts slightly and responds in a gleefully malicious voice, "They have potential. But we will finish long before they are a threat." Another, deeper voice seems to bellow from the walls, "I hope for your sake, that you are correct. It would not do well to have them upset our plans." "Indeed", agreed the wheezing voice. "Fear not," the cloaked figure stated, "for we will raise the master soon enough. All Praise the Red Eyes!" "All Praise the Red Eyes!", the two other voices cried in unison. -------------------------------------------------------------- Piper grins back at Zauber. "Yeah, I do....Well, I'll see you at dinner then. Bye."

So much time was left in the day. Billy sat down again, and wondered what could be left to do, letting his eyes wander around the room. Well, there were a number of things he could do. Go see if Oddak knew anything more, talk technical with James, try and find out what the staff learned from the spider magic....
"Don't you have a hobby?" Billy whipped around his room in a panic. Someone had spoken, someone inside his head. He suddenly remembered what Gob had said about being pressed into service- "Oh my god, you are self absorbed, aren't you? Think you're some sort of hero in a fairy story, do ya? Whatever it is you think you're fighting, it probably doesn't even know you exist. It's pathetic, when you really think about it." "Who are you?" he whispered to the room. No one could be in here, the hair- "Oh, I saw that. Paranoid to, huh? You must be a big hit with the ladies." Billy ducked down to check under his bed. "Self-absorbed, paranoid, AND stupid! Okay champ, I'm going to give you a little help. Over on the table, this way, c'mon." Billy rose up and looked over at the table. His tool-bag, the piles of sticks, and the one intact spider were all that sat there. "Well, don't just stant there. I don't have the capacity to bite anymore." He moved forward cautiously, and touched the hairy not-corpse. "Not that one, dumbass. Look closer. You're so warm/" Billy leaned in close. No, not just this spider. A smaller one sat on it's back, one made of twigs and woven with hair. "Bingo, Goldilocks. How'r you doin?" Billy was dumbstruck. "What? But, I mean, how are you alive?" "Beats me. I'm just going about my business, happy as a clam, biting thing and all that crap, when all of the sudden a shrike goes off in my head, I get a splitting headache and go belly up. The lights flip off. But then, I'm in here, and they start coming back all at once, slowly. And then I start getting smarter, like, having thoughts that never even occurred to me when I was a spider. And I keep hearing this sort of girlish voice in my head, and eventually I guess I learned how to talk and can also read your thoughts. And that's the story. The end. Wasn't that a fun story time?" "Wait, you can..." Billy began, trying to find some proper footing. Then, memory hit him like a ton of bricks. The Headmaster had said that a mage tool finds the wizard who was meant to wield it. Dawning horror rose in his gut. "What, so we're partners or something?" Billy just gaped.

Zauber returned to his wing, ready to relax before classes started again later in the day. Taking a seat in the area around the Shield Wing's central monument, Zauber prepared to sign what had happened earlier that day to the Sprite within the wards. Raising his hands, Zauber formed the letters to spell out his greeting and was met with a strange response.
Hello Zauber looked up startled towards the Sprite. He had never heard a response from the Sprite before. Looking up towards her questioningly, Zauber was only answered with the Sprite playfully pointing for him to look lower. Following her direction's, his eyes came upon a wand-like flower that stood apart from the other plants that grew in the displays around the Shield Wing's monument. As Zauber reached for the flower, it reacted and seemed to grow with a new life until it was fully formed with Zauber's hands. Zauber's eyes glazed over as he connected with his mage tool. A yellow mote escaped from him and danced around the birdcage-like petals before being stored inside. Zauber came to his senses but continued to stare in shock at what he had just found. Once he had absorbed the situation, he turned his gaze back up towards the Sprite who gave him a wink before flying off to the other side of the sphere that was her cage. The mage tool in his hand had grown similarly silent. Zauber would speak to her again another time, for now he was going to rush off to sign up for an evening class with Zane. He had some things that had suddenly become important to learn.

"So, you don't know anything?"
"I told you; I was alive, I died, I was pulled back smarter. That's all I remember." Billy had been interrogating it. It hadn't been going well. "Stop saying you were alive. You weren't ever really alive." "I was totally alive," It said, offended. "No you weren't. You are some kind of magic construct. Not alive." Billy was only getting more annoyed by it. "Racist." "What!?" "You heard me. Why don't you pull my buddy here back, that should prove it." Billy looked over the big spider that the little one was sitting on.Bones had done it, sure. But that was when they had been whole and full of goo. The one in front of him was hollow, so it would never- "Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. You want me to add "coward" to you're list of sterling qualities?" On the other hand, he could very well shut this thing up. Whatever the case, he had been meaning to try bringing something this big back ever since he learned the spell. He steadied himself, and began to mumble under his breath. "Body without soul, vessel without water, do me this honor and awaken from your slumber. Become a hand of the kingdom in penance for your crimes and be welcomed into the halls of glory. Protect in death as you attempted to murder in life. In the name of the King, I offer you this. Rise!" The words weren't strictly necessary, but he had always liked the traditional chant for raising the enemy. Whatever it was, it had an effect. There was a feeling, as if a great space had been filled up. The Spider glowed, just for a moment, small black bubbles rising up off of it. It began to twitch, then move it's legs. Finally, like a newborn deer, it gained some strength and stood up. Billy couldn't tell, but he was pretty sure it was looking at him expectantly. "Well..." "HA!" "Alright, I'm big enough to admit I was wrong." "I'll bet. GET HIM! GO! COME ON BROTHER! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? LE~TS GO! COM ON! TEAR HIM UP< HE DOESN'T HAVE A BOOK OR ANYTHING! WHAT ARE YOU, SCARED? C"MON! GO! ...GO!... GO!............ You're not going to go, are you?" The big spider had no response to this, simply standing there, looking at Billy. Billy proceeded to knock the doll off of his new minions head, and onto the table. "1." he said, maintaining a facade of perfect calm, "It can't here you, and 2. even if it could, it's just the body. I can't snatch whole souls out of the nether, at least not yet. It was a good try though, I'll give you that. Now, I'll have to get to a class in a few minutes, so I'm going to be leaving you in here. Spider?" Spiders can't stand at attention, but this one gave it the old college try. "He can move around, so I want you to sit on him." Said Billy, moving over to Gob and gently shaking him awake. Behind him, he heard a satisfying scuttle, and a hairy plop. In his head, the voice of the doll became muffled. Gob was roused momentarily. "Good afternoon, Mr.Gob. We have class now, I think. Lets go." Billy and Gob Exited the room and went their separate ways, Gob heading off to his general magic classes, while Billy went to his death ones. As he walked into the death classroom, he noticed how refreshingly quiet it was in his head. The doll must not be able to communicate over long distances. "Afternoon professor. Lovely day, isn't it?" he would figure out what to do about all this later.

It had taken a moment to search through the college's list of classes, but eventually Zauber found what he was looking for. Traveling to the upper levels of the Shield Wing, Zauber entered into the area where the upperclassman Zane would be teaching magic.

"MR. ASHGROVE!" an angry voice bellows from down the hall. A professor, one from the Transmogrification Wing, was stalking down the hall towards Eric. The Professor's eyes burned with anger. he seemed to have suffered some damage from Eric's little prank as scorch marks were apparent on his face and a tuff of his hair still burned comically.
"YOU'VE PULLED YOUR LAST PRANK! COME HERE!"
