Well, I think the point was to not chose a god or god-like being and stick to the more fundamental creatures of myth.

I wonder what would have happened if I chose to be the Slender Man...

 I would've made a heck of a villain, right?

Slenderman isn't really a mythology monster. More of an urban legend. That's like playing as the crazy killer with a hood for a hand, or Mothman, or the Jersey Devil. More of an internet urban legend, at that rate, so it would be like playing as Smiledog or The Rake.

I'm not making a very good case here, am I?

Thats a funny analogy! So moving the topic here I guess um what are the guide lines for what monster I can be?

No gods, but other than that you have the whole of the Mythological canon to pick from.

I understand what you meant. And you're right. It's just an interesting thought, is all.

Though, I did have a story in mind for him, though. For the Horror Story RP, if we should ever get around to running it.

Well, lets see...

Multiple types of Fairy, all the classic Greek monsters (Cyclops, Manticore, Pegesus), I'm pretty sure the various tiers of angels, demonic entities, classic Halloween monsters (Vampire, werewolf, witch, the like), or would you like something a little more esoteric?

How about this, what sort of character do you want to play?

So many different kinds to choose from. Depends on what body type you want to have, what abilities you want to have, where you want your character to come from and all that.

Ex: I wanted a humanoid, but nothing monstrous like an Ogre or a Werewolf or a Gorgon.

I wanted something obscure, to make sure I was being unique, so no Vampire or Ghost or Zombie.

I wanted something versatile as far as powers go, so nothing like a Goblin.

I wanted something that can speak, so nothing like Bigfoot or El Chupacabra.

That left me with plenty, still, and eventually, I narrowed it down to a unique one with an appearance I like, powers I can use in numerous situations, from a mythology that I'm somewhat familiar with. The Fext, an undead being that resembles a vampire (pale, handsome, powerful), but has no fangs and no vampire weaknesses.

And you can do the same for yourself, if you ask yourself the same questions. Just answer the following questions.

1. Do you have a certain mythology you're most familiar with, or that you like most (Greek, Egyptian, Japanese, etc)?

2. Do you prefer a humanoid body, an animal body, an object body, a chimera body (mixing more than one creature/animal/organism), and incorporeal body (like a ghost), an amorphous body (like a blob), an energy body or shapeshifting?. Then specify which body type.

2a. If humanoid, is it short, childlike, thin, curvy, muscular, fat or old?
2b. If animal, what kind of animal?
2c. If object, what kind of object?
2d. If chimera, combining what creatures?
2e. If incorporeal, then does it have a definite shape? Define the shape (this answer will likely result in a fay creature, a spirit (living or undead) or a demon.
2f. If amorphous, ask me to elaborate.
2g. If energy, what shape? Humanoid or amorphous? If amorphous, see 2f.
2h. If shapeshifting, are there only certain forms it can take, or can it take nearly any form?
2i. What size?

3. What types of abilities do you prefer? Physical (coming from the body--wings, tail, strength, strength, speed, etc), Mental (Telepathy, Animal Communication, Precognition, etc), Spiritual (Possession, Soul-Stealing, etc), Magic, or a combination?

4. What weaknesses do you think your monster/beast/being/creature would have? Nothing outlandish. Fear of the light, or cold steel, or smoke, or dogs, or holy symbols are some examples.

Yeah, just answer those questions, and I can help you make a choice based on something that closely matches your answers.

Well...all I got from that is 'Something medieval, and maybe human'.

Sounds like you want a shapeshifter. But not many shapeshifters existed during the Medieval Times. Only the Incubus and the Succubus, and Demons. And perhaps one of various types of Boogeyman.

Oh! Or a boggart! You could be a boggart! A mischievous little goblinoid who loves to pull pranks, scare people and can shapeshift into whatever fear! Basically a Boogeyman, but shadowy, about as short as a goblin in its true form, and with the capacity to sense fear and shapeshift (among other powers). I mean, not exactly medieval, but it's stinkin' close.

Yes! It's perfect!

If you choose it, here's the link to some info about the Boggart.
