So what's up with the weather?
What's the lastest news on the forest fires in Australia?
In Holland we had a hurrican level storm (150 km/h or 100 mph winds were the highest speeds); lots of damage, I think 95 million or so.

I pay little attention to the news, but what I hear is many people have lost their homes in the blaze. They're often moving too fast for effective escape. Large-scale evacuations of certain areas have happened. Turns out some kids may have started some of the fires, as always seems to happen.

Fortunately, BruiseViolet (a new member of the site, whose account I am currently managing until she gets reliable internet) lives in Queensland, far to the north, TheManiak and I live in Melbourne which is fire-free Victoria and Whaliens123, to my knowledge, lives far to the north of the flames. At the moment, all known Australian SPL members are safe.

That storm seems horrible. Melbourne's been hit by a few recently, with trees falling and crushing cars. Thankfully TheManiak and I are safe.

Though there were heavy winds, they were not as extreme as I mentioned, that was somewhere else in the country. I've had no trouble, but I did see trees uprooted/smashed nearby. Some nearby roads were blocked, but not those I needed to use; family and friends had to take long detours though - bear in mind that we have a relatively small country and densely populated / paved country, so like 5 minutes/1 km is long for us; especially compared to other larger/spareser populated and/or paved countries (like England, France, Germany, US, Australia).
Anyway, in other places there were gas/water/electricity lines broken that lie near/under/through/over such lines (big effin ball of fire somewhere when gasline broke).
And of course trees on houses, cars and people (3 died, I think).

We hear about the forest fires all the time, aint much new stuff going on in the world (always the same things with slight variations), so this was reported widely as it was new and unexpected (and we are a very internationally oriented country, which probably contributes to it).
There are 3 fires, right? One caused by kids, one by a military exercise (fireworks/bombs?) and one of which I do not know the cause. Everyone was worried they would merge in a big inferno or something.
Though it rained, it was a drop on a hot plate and now it's hot and dry again, I think. Hope it will rain soon there - most firemen I saw on the news/in the papers were beat.

Heh. Before I finished school, I'd often walk 3 km just going home every day. It's that far to the local shops from where I live. More importantly, it's the nearest bus stop. Heck, here in Australia a 1 1/2 hour drive isn't too long if you travel the route fairly regularly. Shows a massive difference in scale.

A couple miles' walk ain't so bad. And neither is a few miles' drive, but a drive makes you keep a closer eye on your wallet. The more miles, the closer an eye...lol

Personally, driving was never a big deal to me. So much in fact, my younger sister managed to get her license before me.

That's actually part of the reason I'm so desperate; my sister, who is 3 years younger than me, has clocked up about 12 of 120 hours needed. In Australia, we must have 120 hours of practice with a supervising driver and I believe a year of possessing a licence before we can get it.

Huzzah! I, Myself, have passed the Learner's Permit test. I need to wait until they process information about my Epilepsy and medication used to treat it. After that, I head back, get my picture taken and can begin driving. I need to hold it for a year at least or until I complete 120 hours of driving with a supervising driver, whichever comes later.

Of course, knowing my luck, once I am able to drive independently NB will occur and completely invalidate the need for it.
