You forgot or probably don't know about the condition for the equation to work: the object must be at rest!
 ... or moving slowly enough with respect to the speed of light. Otherwise, the equation is slightly modified.

How can it be at rest and still accelerate to nearly light speed...? That sounds contradictory unless I'm missing something...

I liked the series too. A little gloomy though. And I found Kelly's accent incredibly difficult to understand.
