A question for you people..

If there was an AI that for all intents and purposes Sentient and self aware, it has a personality and thinks and feels like a human.

Would you treat it like a person, or a smart toaster?

Anyway, the reason for this is something I read in another fourm.

Some people were debating something along the lines of if a futuristic artificial intelligence could feel, and if could be considered a person.

I would go with, "If it can convince me that it's a self-aware being, then treat it as such."

Otherwise things get ugly..

Making a self-aware AI?

Genuine question - how do you tell them apart?

Say I present you with one AI controlled cybershell kitten and one real kitten. One with real pain/happiness, one expressing programmed behaviours of pain/happiness. You can spend as long as you want with both of them and perform any tests you like - you'll never be able to tell which is which. Why would you save one over a million of the other? For that matter how would you know which to save.

Unless you really hated AI it wouldent matter. Though remember, while both may be "Living", one is manmade and expressing something almost exactly similar to real feelings, the other is a biological cocktail that has feelings. The AI can believe it has feelings, and for it it's programming may seem like feelings, but living things just have feelings as a generalization. It's effectively coded into their DNA. There may be little difference but what differs is that for one, feelings aren't a true part of it's nature, for the other they are. Unless you wanted to get to where you made an AI to build an AI with feelings, but even then it's not the same.
