I think Zale and Dryad have touched on this with their recent arena match, but would anyone be interested in doing a battle created using only characters made through a D&D character builder?
D&D 4.0 is the one I'm most familiar with and would also probably be the best one to use in this situation as all classes/characters are pretty much balanced. Using that system each character would only have a group of At-Will, Encounter, and Daily (Would be the same as Encounters in this situation since I doubt fights would go longer than a day) abilities. Each character would be set to the same level so that it would be fair. We could even start at level one and have characters level up with arena matches. I still have my arena match to finish with Vault, but I would be willing to try this out afterwards.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. |

I know 3.5 very well.
I would love the chance to test out my ability to manage mechanics.

We could even roll dice if we want to trust each other to be honest.

So, anyone want to try something like this?
“She'd become a governess. It was one of the few jobs a known lady could do. And she'd taken to it well. She'd sworn that if she did indeed ever find herself dancing on rooftops with chimney sweeps she'd beat herself to death with her own umbrella.”

There are versions of the old D&D 4.0 Character builder on ThePirateBay. The current paid version of the character builder has more updates and uses Silverlight but the old version should be enough for what we want to do.

Sigh.
I don't even like 4e. 3.5 has most of the Core rules online for free. Which is why I prefer it. Let's see if I can find this thing, then..

I vote for 3.5e as well. All the books I've read were 3.5e.

I'm not as familiar with 3.5, but 4.0 seems more balanced. Every class has the same set up basically for abilities and utilities.
I also say we try and keep this simple at first and just stick with class skills only instead of adding in any possible magic item.

It balances by making everyone the same.

So then just fighters, barbarians, paladins (w/o magic), rangers, and thieves? No wizards or sorcerors? Am I right to say that that's what you mean?

Which I think would be useful for an RP setting
We would be RPing the skills, but everyone would have a fair number of skills to pull out during the fight. In 3.5 it seems like someone like a Mage could stack up to many skills compared to another class and the arena match wouldn't be fair.

No, any class would be fine. There are just quite a lot of magic items though and I thought it would be better to stick to class skills only for our arena characters.

Everyone has certain.. abilities.
4e Redefines things with Roles, such as Blaster, Controller, Etc.. It also only has a fraction of the old alignment options, which irks me.

There are attempts at fixing the wonkiness of 3.5.
Here you have the tier system of 3.5. There's also countless homebrew.

I'm biased.
The forum I read to learn about D&D has a pro-op, anti-4e bias. I inherited that, unfortunately.

I'm biased as well, I particularly like 4.0 because it is simpler and noobfriendly which allowed me and my friends to start experimenting with the game.
If we did 4.0 we wouldn't have to worry about tiers as much. It doesn't exactly have the high level craziness 3.5 has but the epic destinies make up for that some and even the melee classes get some high level skills. If we do all decide on 3.5 I'll go with it.

3.5 isn't half bad if you do it correctly.
For example: e6 (Epic Six) Instead of having 20 levels, then epic, you have 6 levels, then epic. Progression is the same, so it prevents the Linear Warriors, Quadratic Mages issue from showing it's ugly mug. It also has neat things for the classes. I <3 it.

Hmm, I wonder if we could do a 3.5 v 4.0 sort of thing and let people use whichever edition they want, though I feel that 4.0 would get beaten at the upper levels.
