I don't really. I just sort of start with a general idea of what they're like then just sort of get to know them while I write. I talk a lot about Billy, mostly because I love the kid, but also because he's a good example case. He has the same basic personality as he did at the start of the thread, but I've radically altered his past since then to fit the type of person I discovered he really was.

You can see something like it n Monsters on the Run, where I'm sort of floundering with Ammon trying to find the right feel. It's only recently, when he was talking to Hypatos about not worrying so much, then going to dig a basement anyway, that I feel I really got a handle on who is.

Well, the way you do it isn't bad. It's just some folks are more lyrical (like 667, GV, Zale and me), and some are more prosaic (like most people are).

What you need to do is ask yourself, who is your character?

Pick a few traits if it helps. I never have my character's personality set in stone at the beginning. It's a growing process.  

[Celadon's Penultimate]

Yeah, the best characters are the ones that can grow. Like the one I based off myself, the Penultimate, for example. He actually started off as just a regular old human that got mysterious passage into a fictional land, Gongolania, and met all kinds of supernatural creatures and went all kinds of epically awesome places. Then I made him a trillionaire with a rich uncle, among numerous other minor alterations. And then I began to develop lands around Gongolania. And then my character became the current Emperor of Graffrica, with no origins on Earth at all. And then I began to develop the entire world besides Gongolania and Graffrica; Whizzo. And then worlds besides Whizzo.

And then a brief lapse, when my folders got misplaced, at which point I began to think of more lands, the first of which was Mygea. And then Arboralia, which eventually became the name of an entire new planet. But then I limited Arboralia to just one of the lands, and combined Mygea and Arboralia onto the same landmass, adding Gandrei, Habador, Illyrion, Sciops, the sea Atlantion and the various islands, and the world's name was changed (very briefly) to Teragea.

And then, a few months after I came up with the name Teragea, I found my old works, and reintroduced parts of that old world into my new one, which I now found to be more aptly named Celadon. And finally, I combined the character's original normal, human, Earthling nature with a new nature, as both a ruler, and a royal, with close ties to the realms of the supernatural (the various binders of creatures and races and beings I've created) as well as the divine (the various pantheons I've encountered). Hence, The Penultimate, and the competition by which he came to be.

So, yeah. That's basically the metamorphosis that all my best characters go through. Even my imaginary friends, from when I was younger. I can barely remember if they started off as imaginary friends, and were promoted to story characters, or started off as story characters, and were promoted to imaginary friends. The ties are just so close.

Likes - People that want to improve their lot in life

Dislikes -  People that take forever to make a deal especially those that try to argue with him etc., this includes some people who have tried to initiate a deal but have stopped just so they can constantly pester him with questions everytime he contacts back, There is also a reporter that tried to get more info on Love so he can write a book--which is taking forever to finish, the deal was for providing information till he finishes his book allowing him to have 2 minutes of Love's time everyday to answer questions---Of course Love was not very specific with the deal and points out all he has is 2 minutes a day and he is not actually required to answer any questions that he does not want to answer.

Phobias - N/A

Personality - "Love" has no defined personality traits except for perhaps being a psychopath and possibly a stalker. "Love" is even thought of an an urban legend. The only way people know about "Love" is word of mouth. No one that has not heard of "Love" has ever received a text from him. Also people that are looking for "Love" eventually receive a text/email from Love. Generally, he is good at his word and will give people what they want. Often times though the person doing the deal is happy but the people around them are less than thrilled. "Love" does not actively "try" to screw over people it is usually the people that did the deals that cause problems mainly due to personality issues. For example he once traded, flight to someone in exchange for humor. It was actually not a problem till the person figured out he did not know how to control it before jumping off a cliff to impress his girlfriend. "The devil incarnate" title comes from his reputation of more often than not leading to unhappy endings despite giving people exactly what they want. He, of course, apologizes every time in very sincere prose. So far he has countless death threats against him. Some that have tried to go after him have also mysteriously disappeared.
However there are some situations where there are happy endings so he is not exactly all bad. Again, it depends on personality since most people that do want to make a deal with him are pretty selfish. He is a sort of "moral test" type of person whether he likes it or not.

Note--Love is overpowered and I do not want him as anything under than a plot device. You can change his name if you want--I think that the name Love is not really that great. Also Love is not necesarilly evil and is open to interpretation--or at least I am trying to make it that way.

I was thinking of making an RP of this where the main characters are people that want to find "Love" for various reasons(This is assuming that the RP is set in the real world and the only superpowers that exist are because of "Love" ie lack of things being the default power ie lack of bad luck=good luck, lack of presence=ninja skills but with some real consequences or weaknesses due to whatever Love gave them in return) Also maybe adding some episodic type of vibe with other people that have made deals using them for evil purposes and the main character have to stop them as well.

Skills - Incredible typing speed, can respond immediately almost as if in conversation, Also hinted to be a hacker extraordinaire since he can find where anyone is just by posts online

Nonskills - Cannot appear in person(possibly due to an extreme phobia--hinted by in text conversations or possilbly cowardice as exclaimed by many people that had a loved one ruined)

=Superpowers!=

Power- "Deal-Breaker"-The ability to take away anything from someone(with their consent) in exchange for something that he owns

Power-Power Swapping--Can swap superpowers in possession and give them to other people in exchange for something they have

Sub-power-Multiple Ability User-Has many detrimental superpowers that can be access at will(but can be switched off)

       Sub-Power-Untraceability-Cannot be traced by anything including superpowers- has at times turned this off to confirm

Power-Consent Detection--Power does not work unless person gives true consent also others cannot type it in the response for the person, if under duress and force to consent Love leaves the person and says deal is off since others are directly interfering with the deal

Power- Personality Swapping--Can even trade habits, whole personalities, even accents and sense of humor

       Sub-Power-Enemy Maker--Can trade away his hate for someone to someone else making that person obsessively hate
       that person(He stated himself  to be able to do this to scare away a girl that tried to stalk him after a successful deal--needless to say it worked though he has not done it himself)

Power-De-Aging--Can even take away age from people(however there are side effects--such as also losing memory)

       Sub-power-Due to this he can also access memories from the years he took away--He contacted the long lost girlfriend of a person he made the deal with and convinced her that he was that person with that person's memories as a prank---before  he switched back to his usual username and explained what he did--that girl left in tears after finding out that her boyfriend no longer remembered her due to his regressed age.

       Sub-power-Erase from Existence--Can technically take away a person's birth( a la Shrek)--(He hints at this to
       someone)but of course no one has been foolish enough to do this since they usually ask "Love" to take away specific
       things that they do not want

Power-Storage--Can store whatever he has traded and does not have to actively use whatever he has taken(This is theoretical since he has been given diseases before and he is still alive though that could be a side effect of possible immortality)

Power-Access--Has access to whatever he has taken and can use them at any time(Again theoretical since he did reveal his location once to people in exchange for "a guarantee of not looking for him" which meant a partial memory wipe afterwards. This did prove that he indeed a person on the Earth--(This is also the time where he has stated about his phobia for human contact which seems paradoxical to his desire to help out others--although he has been stating for some time he might be thinking of ending these deals since he realizes that he has a massive hatedom)

Power Scale--  Unmeasurable--Works anywhere on the world flawlessly and has no shown limit to power other than requirement of consent

Control Scale-- n/a ---Works much like a supernatural dealmaker not unlike Alton King's Gambling Power

People have tested "Love" and these are several rules they figured out and posted on a website--not funded by Love himself


1. Sarcastic responses don't count. "Love" complains that he needs true consent to have his power work.
2. No one else can directly affect the deal including through mind control, gunpoint, etc. Though people can talk and convince them to not take the deal.
3. Also he is unable to make a deal with a person twice, he ceases contact with a person after the deal is done.
4. You can be contacted multiple times as long as a deal has not been completed but once a deal has been completed Love ceases to call back.
5. Love also is limited in amounts of active deals offered. He sometimes complains in text that he has other people that want deals and politely informs them that he will callback at later times.
6. Conversations with Love come to and end if a person that has done a deal comes close to another person initiating a deal. 7. Love also has limits on what he gives in exchange ie if he does not have what the person wants then they can try to narrow down the closest to what they are asking for or the least objectionable thing in return.
8. More than one person can talk to "Love" at the same time double deals are also possible.
9. Love contacts you--though and can always tell when you want to contact him
