I'm working on the backstory, but if I do put it out it I won't appear in it until later in the story.
Oh and it is possible that I may not be on for the next month dependant on various variables.

Correction to the previous post: I will actually appear in the story at the beginning.
Now for the story:
    The sun came over the horizon as two people walked onto what the day before had been a battlefield but was now nothing more than a field of dead bodies. It was easy to see that the fight had been one-sided as over 90% of the bodies all had similarly colored armor on. One of the two people bent down to check one of the bodies then shook her head.
    "It's no good to help anyone here. They're all dead," she said.
    She had short, black hair with feathers threaded in and wore a dress. The dress was a plain one, colored brown and green. On top of the dress, she had a belt with a pouch and dagger attached. Her companion scanned the horizon then said, "There don't seem to be any beings coming to check on them either, Dryad. We should leave though. Buzzards are coming in droves like they always do after a battle."
    The companion was also female. Her hair was also black but it fell to her waist. Her dress was black with a golden rendition of a phoenix at the chest and lions at the hips on the sides. Her belt had a pouch attached on one side and a tattered looking book clipped to the other. Dryad responded to her statement, "Something about this needs to be done. The five major civilizations need to stop this in some way, Aurum!"
    Aurum pulled out a piece of paper in the shape of a person and wrote on it, then said, "As far as I can tell, there is no way to stop this war. Even if the five civilizations, that is: the Draconic Empire, the Elemental Union, the Empire of Winds, the Kingdom of Swordsmasters, and the Kingdom of Witches, were to intervene and stop the war, the second we leave the slaughter would resume."

    "But what if we were to get the five major civilizations to stay for eternity. Like, for example, a school that they are required to send one student to each year," said Dryad. "And they each have to give up one piece of knowledge to teach the students."
    "That might actually work, Dryad. Although, it will take us a lot of effort to get the five civilizations to agree to it," said Aurum. "Also, what would the school be called?"
    "I hadn't thought of that," said Dryad. " I'm not good with names."
    "I thought as much. Fly!" said Aurum as she sent a message on her paper doll.

    Six weeks later, Aurum and Dryad arrived at the city, Tathagata, of the Elemental Union. They approached the 50 meter high walls and showed their identification papers to the guards before passing through the gates into the hustle and bustle of the street. From a bakery they heard, "Get bread and cakes here! We're having a sale at 25% off all items!"
    Down the street were stores of all kinds, apothecaries, butchers, weapon stores, magic stores, etc. Children ran about screaming and yelling as they played games.
    "Hmmm," said Dryad as she and Aurum walked down the street. "I remember that game, I think. It's one where the kids pretend that they have high-level powers and that they are heroes, if I recall correctly."
    "Yes, you're right," said Aurum as they arrived at the Mage's Guild. "Children are so cute to watch."

    Aurum and Dryad went into the Mage's Guild. The doors were made of tempered steel inlaid with bronze designs. Inside the Mage's Guild it was a cool 24 degrees Celcius and people were sitting around doing work or chatting, but as people noticed Aurum the volume gradually died down. Aurum and Dryad walked over to one of the myriads of boards with jobs and tasks that needed to be done. Aurum picked one at random, looked at it, and said, "Ok, let's do this one. It's hunting down a chimera in the Burning Woods to the north."
    "That sounds---" said Dryad.
    "Take me Aurum!"
    "No, me!"
    Several people in the Mage's Guild started up a din asking for Aurum to take them along on the job when finally, "QUIET! All of you shut up!"
    It was the guildmaster and he was furious, "Aurum chose Dryad, a new member, to be her partner for jobs! Don't try to become Aurum's partner just because she is the strongest in our guild!"
    The guildmaster turned around and said, "I am sorry Dryad for the rudeness of our other members. Has Aurum explained to you how guild rankings work since she chose you right after you joined, then took you out for a job immediately?"
    The guildmaster was a tall man with an intimidating air about him. He always wore a pair of formal pants and a clean white shirt. On his belt were a pair of daggers and a pouch.
    "No, sir," Dryad said. "Aurum explained absolutely nothing."
    Aurum sighed, "You didn't have to say it like that, Dryad."
    "Alright then," said the guildmaster. "Explain things to her on this job Aurum, since you're going out on another job again."
    "Yes sir," said Aurum as she dragged Dryad out of the guild building to buy supplies. "We're going to need food, water, paper, and...some hydrargyrum."

    "Aurum, what are the guild rankings?" asked Dryad.
    Aurum explained as they went to get the supplies, "Well, guild rankings are similar to how they do the national rankings except guild rankings aren't as strict. Basically, there are three levels and in each level there are three ranks. The levels are cupr, argent, and aur. For the ranks, you add an -um, -ous or -ic to the end. Thos ranked as cuprum are the weakest, those ranked as argentous are dead center in the rankings, and thos ranked auric are the most powerful."
    "What rank are you, Aurum?" asked Dryad.
    "Nationally and in the guild," said Aurum as they walked through a gate into the chemical sellers' portion of the city. "My rank is the highest one: Auric."
    They stopped in front of a shop called "Rare and Exotique Chemicals."
    "And here is the shop that I buy from," said Aurum.
    They entered the shop which was nothing more than four walls, a counter, and containers holding chemicals.
    "Hello, Aurum," said the man behind the counter. "What are you here for today?"

By the way based on what I've posted so far, has anyone figured out what Aurum's powers are?

Perhaps, judging by her name (Aurum= Gold)...Alchemy?

Not quite Shadowulf1. Aurum's named Aurum only because of her rank (Auric).
Philote is somewhat closer though there is a clue he's mising.
