Character Q&A

Gentleman Vaultboy
So, little role-playing experiment. Have a question for someones character that you don't want to or haven't had the opportunity to ask in game? Well, ask them here to have it answered in character.

For example:

Hey Crav, is this your first rodeo or have there been worlds before the current one?

Hey son, wanna' learn how ta' make witch balls?

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly how I wanted this to work.

Zaubar and Asoka Yamata: Where does your magic come from, and how does it work?

Zaya, what was the deal with that all those other yous? I regret that I never quite figured it out.

"Embracing eternity is hard, even for the Divine. Even the Gods feel age. The endlessness of existence becomes to much for them, so they remain in the timeless blur that is the Celestial Realm. In order to preserve myself from the exhaustion and weariness, I changed. While all immortals alter themselves to fit more into the new mosaic that is a novel world, they hold the same essence. The same pattern, expressed in a new way. I changed myself more, morphing into a brand new personality. I would live as it for years and years, then change myself again. An endless dance of faces and reinvention."

"In this world, I decided to reembrace my original mental template. I greatly enjoy my multifaceted nature."

"The main answer is that it comes from my Core, just like all the other super powered beings of my race. My Core sends out data to manipulate Philotes into the structure of the spell I want. Mana for me is the limit to which my Core can manipulate a quantity of Philotes or the information that can be transferred to any given Philote. My Core grows naturally over time and the more mana I use the more the Core can expand."

"Specifically though, my Core of Arcana works by generating varying motes of arcane energies out of structures of Philotes, such as the mote of shielding. My spells work by utilizing one or more of these motes and my strongest spells will become available once I'm able to string several of these motes together in varying sequences."

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Uburra-Namal, any particular meaning behind your name?

Omni, why do humanoids seem to be the standard form of any sentient race?

Other people can ask questions to. This definitely isn't just to satisfy my own curiosity.

The way I tried to rationalize it with Gilgamesh (If I remember correctly) was that he took the forms of his other races so far and then created another simpler Base Race, the Humans, that was more suited to adapting than being specialized like the other races. So, instead of the other races being built off Humans, humans were created as simpler models of per-existing races when Gilgamesh took the domain of Body.

Zale might have something else to say though .

The Omni does not create the mortal races.

That is the province of the Divine Children.

"My people's magic comes from within and in all originality, it was a gift from the gods. Although, like the fire that Prometheus gave to humans in Greek mythology, once given by the gods, the gift was not under their control anymore. As such, magic among my people is done mostly by way of controlling the power that was given to us, which we call 'mana,' through thought, while there are some rituals that we do have for extremely powerful magics, most people use the easily used thought-triggered magic.

Thus, we utilize mana to alter the world around us so that we can cast our spells."

Zaya: "Sounds right stupid. At least I know how to turn the bloody magic that I taught off. Which is amusing, since that Sorcery nonsense is derived from the lessons my Hags taught, so I could probably neutralize the whole damn thing with ease. "

To Any Of The Gods: Where dafuq did everyone else get magic? So many people seem to have generic magical talents, but most of the ones I've made are derived from more or less the same source. I.e: Zaya.

The only one that isn't is the Sea Witches, which derive their powers from mimicking Waverider's own power, essentially catching and amplifying an echo.

Even the Cecaelia use a variant of Sorcery (Waverider isn't very creative).

To Crescent Moon: How is it that the items of power of your family were scattered, as fearsome as their power is?

Zaya: "It is indeed, because it usually takes longer. Most of the time, magic trickles into a civilization slowly, as a result of discoveries from a single insane individual or the interference of divinities or familiar spirits. It's much to soon now. Some of the more durable races have individuals that were alive during the cosmogenisis. What. 400 years? Far to soon for anything outside of aritficial acceleration."

"Of course, I could be wrong. I rarely am, but never discount the possibility."

At the very least, it'd be nice if a bit more of a backstory was established, rather than:

"Oh, they have magic. Wizards and stuff."

I want to understand where and how.

It bores me with "Oh, they just have it. Maybe they were born with it, I dunno."

You mean their actual knowledge/skill of magic rather than how it was obtained?

I just attributed it to how each race's basic attributes interacted with their Mana.

Durhian Pitching Student, Ilium: This is actually a great question. We've honestly been trying to figure it out for a while. Our working theory goes like this:

Vandals are young. In terms of age, they're barely a week old. All of them, every last one. And they came in later than the others, and were made almost in response to an emergency.

The Veteran: Let me just cut in here a sec, darlin'. You're right on the money with that, so I designed em' to be quick learners. Ya know, yet em' up to snuff real fast in case the city was attacked. Didn't expect em' to learn that fast, though...

Ilium: That's exactly what I was going to be getting to. When the first three Vandals came into the city, they were all less than an hour old. When Horizon first saw magic, she tried to learn it when she was barely one and a half. We think that there was still some of that energy of creation that had yet to dissipate at this point, a sort of supercharging their own ability to create. And they're directly influenced by what they see in that first hour of life, because Vandals are naturally a collectivist species.

Now, here is where it gets interesting: Vandals weren't made from nothing. The power of creation leapt out into the desert and turned a bunch of sand into a bunch of bugs. Not two hours later, one of them, creation energy still probably lingering on her, discovers that if you can touch something at is core it changes and becomes a new thing? A creature who only recently, very recently, went through a similar metamorphosis herself has this epiphany? That cannot be a coincidence!

I don't think what we do can be called magic, even. I think what we do is actually touch the divine spark present in all things and cause it to destabilize and unleash it's power onto the world, influenced by our expecta-

Dwarfish Pitching Student, Thatch: Don't taint this with your personal interpretation! Water to fire, Ilium! Water to fire. Tell me how that would make sense?

Ilium: Fine, I don't want to get into this! The point is, it's like we're breaking the container holding the energy of creation within something and just letting it do whatever it wants. The implications of that is just something I don't even want to consider to deeply. And we don't even know how far it's possible for us to go with this. We fully admit we are  throwing things at a wall to see what sticks, sometimes literally. We haven't even figured out exactly how the process works yet, what influences it, why some people can throw the same thing but get two different effects, or why individuals get the same effects time after time. Horizon doesn't care about that stuff, as far as she's concerned you throw things and magic happens. She's a self proclaimed idiot, she doesn't get the almost blasphemous implications of what we're doing.

Thatch: PER-SO-NAL IN-TER-PRE-TATION!!

Ilium: Interrupt me again and I will personally interpret my foot in your ass!

Asoka: "It's not stupid in my mind, but then I guess that that's the because I grew up with it like that and-"

Crescent: "Before anyone says anything else, my name is NOT 'Crescent Moon.' I use Crescent as a name in order to honor my family's ancient teacher Celia Crescent, my full name is Shigemoto Wen Mei!

Now to answer your question, the founders of my family were the ones who appear to have made all of the ones I've found, the rest are kept for the most part in a vault, not that living storage area, but an actual metal vault, and my family's founders disappeared many years ago so we assume that they're still alive and running around several dimensions scattering what they make as they go. It's tiring but feels good to find the scattered items."

Mina: "Now that the griever is done talking, I'll answer the question directed at me and other gods. My young races were given their powers by way of my divine power and continue to use them by drawing upon the power of the land. The main thing that restrains them is how much magical capacity they have. That is, there is a maximum amount of energy that any of them can draw upon in a given day."

Crescent: "I'm not grieving, stupid goddess. My family's traditional colors to wear are black for girls and white for guys to symbolize yin and yang. Each of the ten major families among my people has a color."

Mina: "You just called me stupid. I'm gonna rip ya limb from limb!"

Crescent: "Just try it! My family was made to slay gods like you!"

The two fly off somewhere to fight...

(Is it fine if I do this since the three aren't even from the same world?)
