eh whatever, the logic used to  be that they exploded due to some sort of gravitational flux causing the matter to be released but what do I know, trying to keep up with the concepts of theoretical physics at my age is like trying to capture smoke with your bare hands.

Imagine this:
A taught sheet represents spacetime. A rock on that sheet represents a black hole, with the indent it makes representing gravity. A marble nearby rolls down the indent, representing something being pulled in. If two rocks come close, they do not explode; they pull themselves toward one another and make a larger indent.

It's the same physics as a rock hitting a planet, just on a much larger scale.
