Just hand-waving as magic takes a bit of the fun out of figuring out a way to make it work.

Why not say..

 "They make use of a form of magic fueled by heat to keep themselves in a stable form. That's why they need to consume heat- without it, they'd collapse into a floating plasma puddle."

Magic usually needs to be internally self-consistent, at least.

It's not like you have to explain how it works from a scientific perspective, but you should from the perspective of a mage or someone knowledgeable about magic.

Nice, so they use a magical process to convert heat into a magnetic or spacial energy field which contains the plasmatic form and keeps it stabalized. Does this mean you could ward off a fire spirit witha  strong magnet?
