For example..

Let's take a class.. called.. Shaman.

Healing (B), Buffing (B), Information Gathering (B), Debuffing (C), Repelling Spirits (C), AoE Damage (C), Physical Combat (D), Shape-Changing (D), Social Skills (E), Stealth (E).

Great Support class. Good at healing, gathering information from spirits, buffing. They can debuff enemies fairly well, get rid of nasty ghosts and spirits, even throw in the occasional area damage spell. It is possible for them to fight, but they aren't very good. They can shift their shape under a few restrictive conditions (No magic while in different shape, only animal forms, lasts only until sun rise or sun set, etc..).

The constant whispers of spirits around them cause people to be on edge though, as well as make stealth nearly impossible.

Um...I'm kinda seeing your math, but...

Still...you have lots of multi-faceted powers. They're TOO multi-faceted. Or TOO powerful to start off with. They just have to be toned down some, is all.

I made an example.

Just pick the things that stand out.

Ooh! Could you do that for Phasma, so I can get a gauge of her capability balance?

You seem grumpy?

Why is this?

Do you not want to try out different styles of play?

That's furthering my point.

Not only do you gain new multi-faceted powers with each level...your PREVIOUS multi-faceted powers develop even STRONGER!

Scaling powers aren't necessarily a problem.

So long as you only have a few of them.

Spellsword

AoE Damage (B), Physical Combat (B), Buffing (C), Magic (C), Social Skills (D),  Healing (E), Information Gathering (E), Debuffing (E), Stealth (E)

The Spellsword does lots of damage in an area with mostly melee boosted by magic. He has a few buffing skills for himself and a few spells to power his sword. However, he cannot debuff enemies. He is more concerned with dealing damage than repairing it and so cannot heal. He is far too loud to be stealthy. He is a brute and so lacks the natural social skills of the average person.

You add to much stuff into one character.

If you wish to be a Jack of All Trades, you can't expect to be good at them all.

Self-Moderation of how much power you possess is critical to roleplaying well with others.

Or you end up outshining everyone..

Which ruins their fun.
