I wonder why

He is Dark elemental from the Realm of Darkness, he looks like a living shadow with a human head.

He tried to kill the group at one point because they wouldn't trade some of their power for a safe passage, later he helped the group defeat the Colossus, but only because it would allow him to become in command.
