Actually, the first lesson is to realize that you stand to gain not by being the most loved person, but simply by being better than any of the alternatives.

Hereditary rulers tend to be more liked because they didn't have to take power from a former government. Loyalty is an important thing to cultivate.
“She'd become a governess. It was one of the few jobs a known lady could do. And she'd taken to it well. She'd sworn that if she did indeed ever find herself dancing on rooftops with chimney sweeps she'd beat herself to death with her own umbrella.”

 Also excellent things to consider.

Wish I had something to recommend. I'm actually a little ways into a horror book I bought some time back; it ain't great, so far as horror goes, or even suspense.

I've been considering going back to the PDFs I downloaded some time back. They're classics. They have to be good, right?

In my experience? No, as classics they don't have to have the prerequisite of being good.

Don't spoil it for me, Marv. I have to hold out hope for something good in all these classics I downloaded and bought...

Hm...then that should maybe move further down my to-read list.

Well, my book choices aren't exactly classy, either. Again, my current genre of choice is (kind of) horror and suspense.

So, yeah, I think the more dramatic works will make lower ranks on my reading list.

Neal Shusterman has some good books.

The Star Shards series is one of my favorites and another of his books, Unwind, was really good as well.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

I think I read Unwind. That's the one were people are recycled or something like that right?

Yeah, I thought it was an interesting concept.

People are recycled in Incarceron and Sapphique, too.

Kinda gives a whole new meaning reincarnation.

Try the Star Shards books, if you're looking for a book in that genre. They are my favorite from him and have a really satisfying ending if you read all three.
