Prophecy for Story

Prophecy:
Disturb not the balance of the white and the black,
Lest the powers of the roses incur their wrath,
Find the Guardians, the magic three,
The Mage, the Knight, and the Spy shall see,
Gather the Eleven, guide the Eleven, gather them true,
Or the Black Rose King shall rule through and through.

A friend made this when we were younger for a possible story, but he never made it. So, I was wondering if anyone could aid me in creating the Eleven. I've already made one of them, so only ten need to be made. Any thoughts?

Well, the whole thing is based on the prophecy, so the characters and world can be pretty much anything.

But what am I supposed to be creating for really. That prophecy doesn't tell me much in the way of character or setting creation...

The friend who originally thought of the prophecy, didn't really define anything other than the prophecy, so if you want, you could help think of a world for it as well as the Eleven spoken of in the prophecy.

The friend who thought of the prophecy only knew of magic, but not of psionics and I think a fantasy theme would fit this much better than a sci-fi theme. Beyond that, there really isn't anything defined about this.

There are two kinds of magic. The defensive and restorative White Magic, and the offensive and debilitating Black Magic.

Neither are really good or bad, simply neutral. Both function somewhat on the idea of sympathetic magic.

White Mages tend to heal people and cure diseases, this causes a certain degree of resonance for the mage. It ends up making them healthy and long lived. Because of this, White Mages try to use magic as much as possible and maximize the returns they get for helping others.

Black Mages, on the other hand, suffer some degree of back-lash when they use magic to harm or harry others. If they set someone on fire, then they'll suddenly find themselves to be uncomfortably hot. If they make someone horribly sick, they'll catch a annoying cold. If they snuff out someone's life in an instant, they'll shave years off their own lives. Because of this, many of them will try to debilitate before actually harming. They also tend to use talismans, charms and amulets to absorb the backlash for them. Of course, the one advantage to Black Magic is that harming practitioners of it causes back-lash itself. Stab a Black Mage and you'll suddenly find a cut on yourself.

Recently, Black Magic has been decreasing. It's not easy to use without harming yourself, and many kingdoms have been subtly turning people away from it. Unfortunately for them, the imbalance between the two kinds of magic has released something..

The Black Rose King.

It's not certain what this thing is, or why it was bound up in the magic in the first place. It may be an old nature spirit, or the remains of a forest god.. Regardless, only hunger drives it now. And it does hunger. It feeds on fear, on nightmare, on terrifying visions and horrific sights. It wants to wrap the world in thorny vines and send everyone into an endless, hellish sleep of never-ending nightmares.

Unless.. Of course, someone find the legendary three Guardians. While they're more known than the Black Rose King, these three are considered folk-legends. A tale for children.

The stories tell of a sleeping kingdom held in thorns and of the brave three who went to save it.

The first was a mage, aged and wise, the last of the Gray Wizards that wielded magic of Black and White.

The second was a knight, bold and honorable, of the Alihan Order known for slaying dragons.

The third was a spy, clever and quick, a woman of the Thieves Guild of the city of Salador.

Together they braved the horrors of the sleeping kingdom and through magic, wit and strength; they freed it. Their adventure done, the three parted ways.

Now for the Eleven.. I think I'll just put up some background + skills for each. You can take that and make a dozen different character personalities.

1) A peasant, son/daughter of a Woodsman. Lives in a cottage in the forest, far from cities. The nearest settlement is two days walk, a small hamlet.

Skills: Surviving on the land, navigating using stars, recognizing plant properties, hunting for food, cooking.

2) A young Nobleman/Noblewoman, child of rich nobles. Lives in a manor outside of the city of Salador.

Skills: Wielding a rapier, court contacts, social skills, literacy, wealthy and well-educated.

3) Young Black-Mage, child of a Black Mage woman branded a sorceress by her village. Grew up in a deserted wasteland.

Skills: Black Magic, arcane knowledge, survival skills, can dowse for water, knows astrology.

4) White Mage, orphaned child who was given to an old White Mage as an apprentice. He/she grew up in a large village on the plains.

Skills: White Magic, arcane knowledge, literacy, knows medical techniques, herbalism.

5) Squire of the Alihan Order. Lives in a barracks-house in a huge city.

Skills: Using a sword, fighting in armor, caring for weapons and armor, navigating large cities, patching up injuries.

6) Young orphaned Thief. Lives in the same city as the Squire, in the hidden Thief's Guild House.

Skills: Navigating cities, picking pockets, burglary-ing, sneaking around, conning people, reading expressions.

I may continue when I get more ideas..

No, it's good. I just hadn't checked here for a little while. I like how you integrated each part of the prophecy into the world and characters. Now to think about this a little more...

...rozes, black roze king, and white and black.....I'm thinking of something along the lines of two realms kept side by side at polar opposites, one white, one black, one dark, one light, etc, with the real world set in the middle. The roses, are these objects, which hold the two apart and exist in the real world...One day, the balance on the side of darkness, through the use of a large spires which breaches into the real world and attempts to break into the heavens and into the side of light. they resemble the shapes of a roze once breaching into the real world..the roses, are released and manifest into powerfull beings which attempt to stop the forces of darkness. this causes more harm than good as it creates a war that is quickly destroying the real world...the only way to stop this, is for it to be reset, using a group of eleven relics, which created the balance to reset the world back to its natural state. If this deed is not accomplished, the spires will break into the realm of lightt, and the real world whcih seperates the two will crumble, allowing all of reality to fall into chaos.

I had considered having the two, White and Black, represent opposed groups, but that's rather cliched.

The idea was a setting with a chess moif, with two sides- The White Court and The Black Court.

The first is moral and very honorable.. but entirely inflexible and stagnant.

The second is pragmatic and fast learning.. but crippled by infighting and hedonism.

Let me do some interpretation.

Dryad Knotwood wrote
Disturb not the balance of the white and the black,
Two great powers, both represented by color. White and black is typically used to represent good and evil, or purity and corruption. Or it could be a chess sort of thing, the great powers being two equally powerful beings locked in stalemate. Or, it might be that these forces realized long ago that they have to be equal, in order for the world not to topple over.

Dryad Knotwood wrote
Lest the powers of the roses incur their wrath,
See, this says to me that the white and black don't have a side, but are dangerous things that shouldn't be toyed with. As for The rose was famously used as the heraldic symbols of royal families, such as the Houses of Duke and Lancaster. The war that they fought for the throne of England was called the war of the roses because of these symbols: The white rose of York, and the red rose of Lancaster. Roses could come in many colors, and many combinations of color. There might not be just two noble houses involved.

They might want to use the white and black, and indeed may be using it, to achieve power over the other houses. The white and black don't seem to want them doing this, as it may tip the balance of power in some way. The houses may invoke the Wrath of the White and Black.

Dryad Knotwood wrote
Find the Guardians, the magic three,
The Mage, the Knight, and the Spy shall see,
The guardians of what? The world? the White and Black? Whatever they are, they seem to be on a different level. It seems interesting that they are an odd number, considering the forces number 2. Perhaps one stands with White, one with Black, and the last with the middle.

A Knight would be serving some sort of lord. That's what a knight is.

A Mage is, in most cases, some sort of fantasy scientist and adviser.

A Spy is a liar, but one who also serves a master or nation. You can't be a spy unless you are someones spy.

Of the three, the mage is the only one who is masterless. Interesting.... Another interesting thing is that they fill the typical balanced adventuring party setup: A fighter, a wizard, and a thief.

Dryad Knotwood wrote
Gather the Eleven, guide the Eleven, gather them true,
Another odd number, unless you count the person that the prophesy is directed at. 11 is also the first of the "Master Numbers" in numerology. But why 11? The phrase the 11 hour means the last possible moment to take care of something, and often implies a situation of urgent danger or emergency. Also, after Judas Iscariot was disgraced, the remaining apostles of Jesus were sometimes described as "the Eleven".

Dryad Knotwood wrote
Or the Black Rose King shall rule through and through.
The Black Rose king may not be specifically alined with the Black. As I postulated before, The Black Rose may possibly be his heraldic symbol. Perhaps he isn't even the one who kicked off he problem, he might just be taking advantage. But he is the most dangerous thing, because he will win without the intervention of the 11. In heraldry, black is symbolic of grief, while the rose is used to represent love. Hmmm....
Hey son, wanna' learn how ta' make witch balls?
