Can't fire benders make fire from their own energy, so they don't need oxygen or anything.

I'll have to disagree with all of you. While each has it's own pros and cons, there is one bending art that you all have ignored, that was only revealed that the end of Avatar.....Energy Bending.

Yes ,but energy bending is very specific and requires intense concentration and willpower. Plus you have to be the Avatar to do it. I would pick earth bending over energy bending any day.

Can't anyone learn energy bending if they are a bender?

I think it said something like everyone used to energy bend but they lost it somehow and divided up into the other four bending styles.

True, I would pick energy bender over all of them. However, it is said IN the series that only the Avatar or the original benders of the world(I'm assuming thousands of years ago in the Avatar universe) could learn to bend energy.

Well, yeah, but you don't know all the feats possible with it. Far as we know, it's only Power Negation. Not to mention, it can only be done by the Avatar, and only with immense concentration.
